Review – Cyber Snipa Sonar 5.1 Championship PC Gaming Headset

Last we were lucky to receive the Sonar 5.1 Championship PC Gaming Headset from Cyber Snipa. I was fortunate to be able to take this headset to the past LAN War at Indiana University and really put it through the gauntlet so-to-speak. After a long tandem of hourly gaming, I’ve got the stats on this superior headset.

The Cyber Snipa Sonar 5.1 Championship headset is a bit unlike any other headset I’ve used. The design is really top-notch, and to be honest, it just looks really cool. It’s very comfortable on the top of your head, but you may run into problems if you have large ears like me. The ear pieces are comfortable, but smaller than they look. I first thought I could turn them, which would be cool, but they’re fixed and won’t slide. After a while, though, you don’t really notice the issue, so it’s not a big complication.

Technically the headset performs at the top of its class. It connects through USB, so it’s great for on-the-go gaming. The drivers installed instantly and the headset was ready to go. With 8 individual speakers, it’s great to use when you’re in a room with a lot of ambient noise. Sitting in a crowded area with gamers all around me yelling, computers buzzing, and people conversing everywhere, the Sonar did a great job of producing enough sound to keep me focused on the game.

Here are the tech specs on the speakers themselves:

SPEAKERS

Front Center Rear Subwoofer
Drive Diameter ø30mm ø40mm ø30mm ø27mm
Impedance 32Ω 32Ω 32Ω
Frequency Response 20~20KHz 18~20KHz 20~20KHz 10~400Hz
Output power 200mW 400mW 200mW 600mW
Signal to noise ratio >50dB >50dB >50dB >50dB
T.H.D 0.4% 0.1% 0.4% 1%
Sensitivity (S.P.L) 108dB 100dB 108dB

Along the connector cord is a channel controller that allows you to change the volume of the main, rear, center, front, and subwoofer speakers in the headset. These come in handy when you want to fine-tune the sound to any game, video, or style of music you’re listening to. Add that to the adjustment software that’s available for download with the Sonar, and you have limitless ability to adjust the settings to near perfection for your playing needs. I was able to hear every spoken word, every creeping monster, and every shot fired in my direction.

The Sonar even comes with its own carrying case once you take it out of its packaging. The case makes it easy to pack up and travel to wherever your gaming takes you, enabling you to take the headset along for the ride. It’s not one of those cases where it’s impossible to fit everything in. I takes about ten or so seconds to pack, zip up, and get going.

The Cyber Snipa Sonar 5.1 Championship Headset performed great for what it was designed for. With its travel case and USB connection method, it was a great headset to have with me when traveling to game. While it was a little bit uncomfortable to me, I eventually lost sight of that while using it. It did get a bit hot since the ear pieces are insulated to cancel out noise, which required me to take breaks. All in all the headset worked out great for me. Sitting at about $80, this is a perfect headset for the price, and Cyber Snipa delivered with it. If you’re looking for a cheaply-priced headset, the Sonar Championship is what I recommend for you.

Pioneer SE-NC31C-K Noise Cancelling Earbuds

Earbud style headphones already do a pretty good job at blocking out most ambient sounds and noises while you listen to music, but they’re not perfect. Neither are Pioneer’s new SE-NC31C-K earbuds, but thanks to built-in noise cancelling technology they manage to filter out about 90% of unwanted sounds, which could mean the difference between enduring crying babies for hours or catching a few Z’s on a long flight.

The earbuds feature some surprisingly hefty 14.3mm drivers which should deliver impressive bass performance, and the inline sound processing unit is powered by a single AAA battery which is promised to provide up to 120 hours of peace and quiet. Available now for a reasonable $99 given the extra noise cancelling functionality.

Toorox 03.2011

Jörn Lindau has announced the availability of a new development version of Toorox, a Gentoo-based desktop distribution, which previews the latest development snapshot of GNOME 3: "The next generation of the GNOME 3.0 desktop is near completion. If you want to test it, you can get the recent development release of Toorox 03.2011 'GNOME3-RC'. It's only available as a 32-bit image. It contains Linux kernel 2.6.37, GNOME 3.0 RC, X.Org Server 1.9.5, LibreOffice 3.3.2, IceCat 3.6.16.... Attention should be paid to the fact, that GNOME 3 needs accelerated graphics support. If the video driver doesn't support this, the desktop will start in a fallback mode" which can't represent all of the functions and the look and feel of the new generation of GNOME. This will happen, for example, if you have an NVIDIA graphics card. But this is no problem - click on Systemconfig in the black panel and start the NVIDIA driver." Griffin PowerJolt Micro Powers Your iPad In Your Car

How many different devices do you power with your car’s cigarette lighter? Now how many of those use a USB cable to draw power? It’s very likely that many of them do indeed use USB, which means having such a port in your car is convenient. I’ve had a couple of different adapters over the years, but they don’t always provide enough power (especially for an iPad), and they are almost always bulky.

Griffin knows what’s good, as they’ve released their PowerJolt Micro, which is a very simple USB adapter for your car. The nice thing is that not only does it provide the necessary juice for an iPad, but the port will actually sit almost flush with the cigarette adapter. No more worrying about bumping and breaking a bulky adapter. For $30, I’d say this is a must-have for the car.

The contest does require you to purchase and download the Bob Moog library if you already haven’t, which is $100, but 100% of the proceeds will go to the Bob Moog Foundation.

The contest submission deadline is July 15th 2011, and multiple entries are welcome. The winner will be announced on the Spectrasonics’ website on September 15th, 2011, with the OMG-1 being presented to them at the 2011 Moogfest in October.

Torchwood returns to television under new management

For its new season, Torchwood is being produced in the US, and almost the entire cast is changing.

Last time we saw Torchwood, it was starting to get really heavy: Major characters were being killed off, plot arcs were being disassembled, and the protagonist came close to giving up on life on behalf of, not just herself and her unborn child, but the entire human race.

She wondered if perhaps The Doctor had chosen not to save the Earth because none of them deserved to be saved. The story closed on a hopeful note, of course, but with the Torchwood office destroyed, and most of the team missing or killed, what could they do next?

Apparently, they go to Disneyland.

Or close to it... The series production has been picked up by Hollywood production company Starz, and the new base of Torchwood will be in Los Angeles. Filming began last month, and the series will premier on 8 July 2011.

John Barrowman and Eve Myles will be returning to the cast as Capt. Jack Harkness and Gwen Cooper, and a few other secondary characters who survived "Torchwood: Children of Earth."

Joining them will be Mekhi Phifer, as a CIA Operative; Alexa Havins, as a CIA analyst; Arlene Tur, as a surgeon; and Bill Pullman, as a convicted child-killer who becomes mysteriously unkillable on the day of his execution.

The plot will center on this strange immortality, which seems to have struck the entire world at once. At first seen as a miracle - thus the subtitle of the series - it soon becomes a nightmare, as the hundreds of thousands of people who are supposed to be dying each day around the world are quickly starting to overbalance food supplies and other resources. Gwen and Jack team up with the CIA to solve the mystery of this "curse," which will span ten-episodes.

The move to shorter ‘mini-series’ style arcs over the old monster-of-the-week format began with the last Torchwood series, Children of Earth, which lasted five episodes. That was an awful long time with a single mystery, and the amount of action and interaction was almost too much, and perhaps, at times, became a bit melodramatic.

What will happen with ten episodes (or, perhaps more appropriately, a ten-hour Torchwood episode). Is that even viable? If the previous series is any indication, the characters are liable to explode with dramatic tension before it’s over.

5-in-1 Connection Kit For The iPad

Although we all love Apple products, it is extremely annoying that we have to go to them for every little thing. For the iPad more specifically, you can’t seem to hook anything up to your iPad unless you’ve taken a trip to the Apple store.

There’s a new way to approach that problem with the 5-in-1 Connection Kit for the iPad. Using this device, you can hook up a TV, laptop, and USB keyboard; you even have the ability to plug in SD cards directly to your iPad (just not all of these at the same time). This does sound a little too good to be true, and the main catch is that it might not be compatible in the future as firmware updates could potentially render it useless. The video quality is also less than Apple’s own HDMI dongle, but for $44.99, there are a lot of people out there that would rather take the chance than buy five or six different connectors from Apple.

Casio’s New Baby-G Shock Watch Features Black Light Ultraviolet Illumination

If you’re worried you might be a little too old to be hitting the clubbing scene on the weekends, Casio’s new Baby-G Shock watches will bring the clubbing scene to you. Introduced at Baselworld 2011 in Switzerland, the watches feature a fashion-forward design with oversized and overlapping numbers around the face that are all coated with a special fluorescent ink that glows like neon (hence the feature being referred to as the ‘Neon Illuminator’) thanks to a built-in black light ultraviolet LED.

And since blacklights aren’t always the safest thing to stare at, Casio has ensured the ultraviolet LEDs used on these new Baby-G watches correspond to international safety standards… as long as you don’t over do it:

The ultraviolet LED offers safety corresponding to the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard for Class 1M. However, an optical lens such as a magnifying glass must not be used for direct viewing of the ultraviolet light source.

Personally I won’t wear a watch I can’t take a magnifying glass to, but I suspect it won’t be an issue for the general consumer populous. Pricing and availability are currently unknown, but the BGA-130 & 131 will come in a variety of color schemes including those pictured above as well as a matte black option.

Microsoft just scooped up 666,624 IPv4 addresses for $7.5 million

Microsoft has purchased 666,624 IPv4 addresses from the bankrupt networking vendor Nortel Netorks after a period of competitive bidding.

The 7.5 million dollars that Microsoft spent on the IPv4 addresses roughly breaks down to a per-unit price of $11.25. In perspective, that is cheaper than the price of registering a domain name, which usually costs around $10 depending on the registrar used.

An IP address is a numerical string that is used by a computer, or other object on a network, to be identified and located. IPv4 has been the prevalent form of IP address for some time.

Why was Microsoft interested in the IPv4 addresses? Because as a commodity they are nearly gone. In fact, the last batch has been issued, meaning that they are now, in effect, a scarce resource. There will be a nearly infinite number of IPv6 addresses available in the future, but complications with the transition to IPv6 has put a premium on the value of extant, and unused, IPv4 addresses.

IPv6, unlike IPv4, uses 128 bits to form an address, not the 32 bits that are employed by IPv4, creating a vast pool of potential addresses.

There were three other firms interested enough in the addresses to submit a bid, with Microsoft ending as the company willing to pay the most.

ICANN looks down on such sales, and anticipates their future occurrence will be limited. Whatever the case, Microsoft has again used its cash pool to give it an edge.

There has been much media hype on the scarcity of IPv4 addresses, something that this sale is sure to re-ignite. Let’s hope that IPv6 reaches maturity in short order, or the market could become somewhat ugly. Then again, according to Wikipedia, IPv6 is a technology still in its “infancy,” so any easing on the demand for open addresses might be a long way off.

According to court filings from the Nortal bankruptcy case, a decline in the value of IPv4 addresses over time is expected, as IPv6 comes into its own. For now though, IPv4 is still hot:

Because of the limited supply of IPv4 addresses, there is currently an opportunity to realize value from marketing the Internet Numbers, which opportunity will diminish over time as IPv6 addresses are more widely adopted.

If we manage to dig up who the other three bidders were, we will update this post. We would not be surprised if other companies that offer cloud computing and storage solutions were among the group, such as Amazon or Apple.

Real-Life Tron Lightcycle Guys Build A Grown-Up Sized Green Machine

If you remember our post about the $55k real-life Tron Lightcycle, then you’re probably already aware that Parker Brothers Custom Choppers have a thing for creating unique rides. Their latest creation is a full-sized version of the classic Green Machine ride-on toy, that forgoes pedal power for an 80-cubic inch Harley-Davidson Evo engine.

Longtime readers might remember a post about the Green Machine way back in 2007 as Huffy created an updated version of the toy, though it was still designed primarily for children. Thankfully the Parker Brothers decided kids shouldn’t have all the fun, so their version of the Green Machine also features in intimidating 45-inch front wheel, rear-wheel steering like the original, and has managed to reach 50mph in their testing. Sadly because of the rear tires their version isn’t DOT approved, so don’t expect to be placing orders for one anytime soon.

Facebook bans 20,000 accounts daily

Facebook chief privacy advisor Mozelle Thompson appeared before the Australian Parliament’s cyber-safety committee this week to discuss Internet-related security issues. Thanks to the event, we learned that about 20,000 users are kicked off Facebook every day for various infractions, including for lying about their age.

“There are people who lie. There are people who are under 13 [accessing Facebook],” Thompson told Federal Parliament’s cyber-safety committee, according to The Telegraph. “Facebook removes 20,000 people a day, people who are underage.”

Although the company requires its users to be at least 13-years-old, the limit is easily circumvented, like on pretty much any website on the Internet. “While the social network has mechanisms to detect liars,” Thompson admitted that “It’s not perfect”.

The original report suggested that the 20,000 accounts banned daily are all for individuals found not to be at least 13-years-old. This is not true; the number actually includes accounts deleted for any serious rule-breaking. Furthermore, it does “not include the proactive efforts that actually prevent fake or under age accounts from being created.”

“At Facebook, we take safety very seriously and we were pleased to participate in a hearing in Australia to talk about our safety policies, practices and systems,” a company spokesperson said in a statement. “As we explained in the hearing, these efforts include removing numerous accounts everyday for activities including spamming, posting inappropriate content, and violating age restrictions.”

Casio Reveals What Their First Bluetooth Low Energy Watch Will Look Like

The first prototype of Casio’s Bluetooth-equipped ’smart’watch was shown at CES 2011 back in January, and while it was one of the more interesting things we found at the show, we’ve been curious what the first production version would actually look like. It turns out that the Bluetooth 4.0 profile technology, which allows the watch to wirelessly communicate with a smartphone while still maintaining a 2+ year battery life, is just being integrated into one of the company’s G-Shock models. Definitely not a bad thing, unless you were hoping to have something particularly high-tech looking strapped to your list to draw people’s attention.

The most notable feature of the watch will be its ability to automatically sync the time to your smartphone, which are usually automatically set by the carrier’s network. Auto-setting watches that rely on broadcasts of the atomic clocks are already commonplace, but this should be more accurate and reliable, particularly when traveling. Other connected features will be the ability to monitor calls, emails and messages including who they’re from directly on the watch’s face, as well as providing vibrating or audible alerts for alarms setup on the phone itself. But at this time specific pricing and availability info have not been officially announced.
