Download Linux Kernel 3 3.4.4 / 3.5-rc3

Linux Kernel 3, Linux Kernel.
Linux is a clone of the operating system Unix, written from scratch by Linus Torvalds with assistance from a loosely-knit team of hackers across the Net. It aims towards POSIX and Single UNIX Specification compliance.
It has all the features you would expect in a modern fully-fledged Unix, including true multitasking, virtual memory, shared libraries, demand loading, shared copy-on-write executables, proper memory management, and multistack networking including IPv4 and IPv6.
Although originally developed first for 32-bit x86-based PCs (386 or higher), today Linux also runs on (at least) the Alpha AXP, Sun SPARC, Motorola 68000, PowerPC, ARM, Hitachi SuperH, IBM S/390, MIPS, HP PA-RISC, Intel IA-64, AMD x86-64, AXIS CRIS, Renesas M32R, Atmel AVR32, Renesas H8/300, NEC V850, Tensilica Xtensa, and Analog Devices Blackfin architectures; for many of these architectures in both 32- and 64-bit variants.
Linux is easily portable to most general-purpose 32- or 64-bit architectures as long as they have a paged memory management unit (PMMU) and a port of the GNU C compiler (gcc) (part of The GNU Compiler Collection, GCC). Linux has also been ported to a number of architectures without a PMMU, although functionality is then obviously somewhat limited.

Greg Kroah-Hartman announced yesterday, June 22nd, the immediate availability for download of the fourth maintenance release for the stable Linux 3.4 kernel series.

Linux kernel 3.4.4 incorporates some updated Radeon, USB and wireless drivers, a few ARM fixes, improvements for the x86 and PowerPC architectures, and some other small changes.

"I'm announcing the release of the 3.4.4 kernel. All users of the 3.4 kernel series must upgrade.

"The updated 3.4.y git tree can be found at: git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git linux-3.4.y and can be browsed at the normal kernel.org git web browser: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git;a=summary" - said Greg KH in the email announcement.

The Linux kernel 3.4.4 is a must-grab update for all Linux users who use the Linux 3.4 kernel. Therefore, upgrade as soon as possible!

With today’s technology, you can store your whole life on your hard drive! Without password protection, nothing is safe (not even this article!). ! To modify a user’s password or your own password in Linux or UNIX use the passwd command.

To change any users password as a root, Login as the root user and type the command:

# passwd User_Name
# passwd dhaval
# passwd soni

Sample outputs:
Enter new UNIX password:
Retype new UNIX password:
passwd: password updated successfully

To Change Your Own Password or as a normal user, Simply type the passwd command:

$ passwd

Sample outputs:
(current) UNIX password:
Enter new UNIX password:
Retype new UNIX password:
passwd: password updated successfully

Fedora Root Login Activation

Fedora uses pam module called pam_succeed_if.so for its authentication. This module is designed to succeed or fail authentication based on characteristics of the account of the authenticated user. Default configuration of this module blocks root login using GUI.

STEP 1: Login as a Normal User.

STEP 2: Open the terminal and use your favourite text editor like vim or gedit to open the /etc/pam.d/gdm.

# su -c “vim /etc/pam.d/gdm”

STEP 3: Comment the following line ‘auth required pam_succeed_if.so user !=root quiet’

# auth required pam_succeed_if.so user != root quiet

STEP 4: Also open /etc/pam.d/gdm-password and put comment in front of the below line:

# auth required pam_succeed_if.so user != root quiet

Save the file and logout from GUI. Now you can login as root :)

Download XZ Utils 5.0.4

XZ Utils, Compression software.
XZ Utils is free general-purpose data compression software with high compression ratio. XZ Utils were written for POSIX-like systems, but also work on some not-so-POSIX systems. XZ Utils are the successor to LZMA Utils.
The core of the XZ Utils compression code is based on LZMA SDK, but it has been modified quite a lot to be suitable for XZ Utils. The primary compression algorithm is currently LZMA2, which is used inside the .xz container format. With typical files, XZ Utils create 30 % smaller output than gzip and 15 % smaller output than bzip2.

Thunderbird 13 Officially Lands in Ubuntu

Canonical announced last evening, June 21st, in a secuirty notice, that the Mozilla Thunderbird 13 email client landed in some of their supported Ubuntu distributions.

The actual version of Thunderbird updated yesterday is 13.0.1, and it has been uploaded in the Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, Ubuntu 11.10 and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS operating systems.

Mozilla Thunderbird 13.0 brings only one new feature called Filelink, which allows users to send large attachments by sending a link to the file, avoiding bounce back of emails.

All Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise Pangolin), Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot), and Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx) users can update their Thunderbird email client to version 13.0.1 right now, by using the Update Manager software.

New screenshots of SolusOS 2

SolusOS has recently gained a lot of attention among the Linux community and the developing team of SolusOS is working hard to keep its popularity. Here are some new screenshots of SolusOS 2, Alpha 5 version, that I found on the Google plus page of Ikey Doherty - founder of SolusOS:

As I notice, there are some improvements here. The gnome panel now looks smoother and doesnt have the weird transparency anymore. There are some minor changes in the notification area, ie the volume icon, the clock setting.  Nautilus file manager also has a new look in Alpha 5, which looks a lot better than in Alpha 4.

The Alpha 5 version of Solus OS 2 is still not available to download yet but I think it will be released for people to test soon. Meanwhile, if you have any idea, question or suggestion about SolusOS, you can share them on SolusOS forum or Ikey's Google page, Im pretty sure you opinions will be welcome.

Calibre Plugin of the Week: MobiUnpack – The Plugin

Calibre is one of the best eBook management software available right now, but its strength lies in the abundance of plugins available for it.

This week we’ll take a look at an interesting extension called „MobiUnpack – The Plugin." According to the developer, this plugin is used to unpack and inspect the contents of DRM-free MOBI files.

MobiUnpack – The Plugin can extract the data from standard MOBIs, KF8s, Print Replicas (AZW4), and even from MOBI dictionaries (with limited support), with the condition that they are DRM-ree.

It can be easily installed from the Preferences menu or from the official forum, and it needs version 0.8.18 or higher of Calibre. A comprehensive tutorial about its usage can also be found on the forum.

When the Network Connections window opens you will need to hit the alt key to display the classic menu bar.
Once its available click on advanced, and then choose the Advanced Settings option.
Here you will see the preference of your network connections. In order to make your laptop use a wired connection, if available, even when connected to a wireless network, you will need to select Wi-Fi and then click on the green arrow pointing down.
This will automatically bump Ethernet to the top.
That’s all there is to it.
