GParted LiveCD 0.13.0-0

Steven Shiau has released a new version of GParted Live, a live CD based on the Debian unstable release with graphical tools for disk management and data recovery. From the changelog and the release announcement: "The underlying GNU/Linux operating system is based on the Debian sid repository (as of 2012/Jul/14). The most significant enhancement is with GParted 0.13.0, which now shows when there is a difference between the file system size and the partition size. Thanks to work by Mike Fleetwood this resolves bug #499202 that has been open since 2007. With this new feature, users can learn if there is unallocated space within a partition that can then be put to good use. Another important application change is a fix for bug #678831 which resolves a problem with overlapping partitions when resizing an extended partition. Also new in this release: adds web browser icon to desktop; adds menu button keyboard shortcut to bring up Fluxbox root menu (bug #578842); useful when using GParted Live without a mouse; updates Linux kernel to 3.2.21-3." How to Edit Your System PATH for Easy Command Line Access

Have you ever wondered why you can just type ipconfig into a command prompt and it works, but when you want to use a command line program you downloaded you have to navigate to its directory? Here’s how to fix that.

Adding a Folder To Your PATH

Open Computer and right-click on any white space, then select properties from the context menu.

When the System section of Control Panel opens, click on the Advanced system settings hyperlink in the left hand pane.

Then you will need to click on the Environment Variables button.

The variable we are looking for is a System variable called Path, once you have found it, click on the edit button.

In order to add an entry to your path, you need to precede the folder name with a semi-colon. For example, if i want to add the How-To Geek folder which is on the root of my C drive to my path i would the following to the end of the Variable value field:
;C:\How-To Geek

Now i can access any content within the How-To Geek folder without having to drill down into the directory.

Top 10 Features Of iOS 6

At the WWDC 2012, the much anticipated thing behind next gen ‘Mac Book Pro’ was, undoubtedly, the introduction of iOS 6. After the demise of former Apple CEO Steve Jobs, there is a lot of blabbering going on about the next iOS version. So without aggravating the spices, when we had the first shot of the product, it  became irresistible not to acknowledge the commendable job that Apple has done yet again over its uniquely differentiated iOS versions.

Talking about the “Best a.k.a the APPLE-Features” that flabbergasted the majority at WWDC 2012 as witnessed by the barrage ‘Apple’ received over the initial intro of iO6, it is not hard to say that the new version would be among one of the major launches of year 2012.
In meantime take a look at the 10 best & lucrative-features of iOS 6;

Facetime Over 3G

One of the most exciting updates that you should know about This feature was previously accessible via Wi-Fi only but this time Apple has inflict in a new spirit by allowing you & your friends to access it over the cellular network. Isn’t it awesome?

Siri On A Learning Spree

Siri created ripples in the apps-sea due to its one of kinds & envied features. But this time it has also been going through advancement as now you can ask questions about movies, get sports scores, make dinner reservations & tweet. It even supports newer languages now. In shorts, this time ‘Siri’ is going to be a definite step-ahead of convenient eyes-free functionality, I am eagerly waiting for.

Call Rejection & Reminder

If you are busy or just not in mood to attend the call, you can quickly send a message to the recipient by saying ‘Hey m busy, will catcha later’ or any other message because you would have the option to even customize such sort of messages. So try out this feature instead of sticking to the swipe-across-do-no-answer thingy. Moreover, as an add-on you can even set reminders about the call you just rejected, to be called up later.

Do Not Disturb

Another smart feature that hooked us, well it is not an airplane mode because you could get calls and messages over your number but your device will not disturb you by keeping the ringing & vibration off. Moreover the key is, if you would receive a call from same number for atleast 3 times then it will reckon it important and will make you aware about the call by activating the ringing or vibration mode. Cool, isn’t it?

VIP Mail

If you don’t want to miss out on any important email then you can mark your important contacts as VIP in your device, this would result in, getting their emails in a VIP Inbox so you don’t stand a chance to miss any of the important mail. Moreover, an SMS notification would also be received on getting the email from the VIP person.

Facebook Integration

After having done with the integration of twitter with iOS 5, this time Apple is coming up with Facebook integration. That means, It syncs all the information about your Facebook friends across all other iOS devices. Moreover, you have to sign into your Facebook account once and then, thereafter, the device will allow posting from Notification Center, Siri and Facebook enabled apps, such as Photos, Safari and Maps.

Passbook

It’s a very handy feature for frequent travellers which let them keep all of the important documents in a handheld device, be it tickets, boarding passes, or even concert passes. It will serve like a very own hand bag.

Safari

Apple has worked on its native browser as well by making it icon-based this time. Moreover, it is coming up with a redesigned sharing menu along with sync provision ability across all the tabs of iCloud devices.

Maps

Apple is coming up with its own MAPS application powered by TomTom. Well this is an ultimate indication of intense & chronic rivalry between Apple & Google. But this newly introduced feature would be loaded with many astounding sub-features like turn-by-turn navigation, real time traffic, and Flyover mode that transforms the normal satellite view into a 3D photographic model and shows a realistic view of the city (only U.S cities, for now). Surprised, eh?

PhotoStream

The new iOS would now allow the photo stream sharing with a group of your contacts. All you need to do is, elect the photo/photos, find “Photo Stream” in the share menu and add contacts. This collection of photos can be made private or can be set to invisible. Your friends can even comment on your photos and vice versa.
These were the top 10 out of many surprising features of iOS 6 which is expected to be rolled out in near time soon. So get ready to pour your heart out to iOS6 because it’s going to be awesum.

10 Awesome Indicator Applets for Ubuntu’s Unity Desktop

If you’ve used Ubuntu a while, you might remember GNOME applets – icons that sat on your panel and gave you access to controls and information. If you miss panel applets, try installing third-party indicator applets for Ubuntu’s Unity desktop.
There are a wide variety of indicator applets available for Unity, most of which aren’t available in Ubuntu’s default software repositories. The commands to install the indicator applets provided here were tested on Ubuntu 12.04.
After installing an indicator, you may have to search for it and activate it from your Dash, launch it with a command, or log out and log back in. This behavior depends on the indicator.

Weather

The weather indicator applet provides constantly updating weather information right on your panel. Install it with the following command:
sudo apt-get install indicator-weather
Launch the Weather indicator from the Dash after installing it.

System Load / Performance

The system load indicator shows you graphs of your system performance on your panel – like the old GNOME System Monitor applet used to. It shows a graph of your CPU activity by default, but it can show graphs for more than one type of resource at a time – from its preferences, you can enable graphs for network activity, memory, and other system resources.
sudo apt-get install indicator-multiload
Launch this indicator from the Dash after installation.

CPU Frequency

The CPU frequency scaling indicator shows you the current speed of your CPU and lets you control its policy – for example, you can force a certain CPU speed, enable power-saving mode, or enable high-performance mode.
sudo apt-get install indicator-cpufreq
Launch the indicator by running the following command after installing it:
indicator-cpufreq

Ubuntu One

If you use Ubuntu One, you might want an indicator applet that shows you Ubuntu One’s status – including your current file transfers and available space – without having to open Ubuntu One’s configuration window. The unofficial Ubuntu One indicator provides this information. Install it with the following commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:rye/ubuntuone-extras
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install indicator-ubuntuone
Log out and log back in. The indicator will automatically start.

Classic Menu

The classic menu indicator provides a classic, GNOME 2-style menu on your panel in Unity. Install it with the following commands:
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:diesch/testing
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install classicmenu-indicator
Launch ClassicMenu Indicator from the Dash after installing it.

Recent Notifications

The recent notifications indicator provides a list of recent notifications that Ubuntu has shown to you – anything that came through the notification daemon appears here. You’ll be able to view all your recent notifications, even if you were away from your computer when they appeared.
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:jconti/recent-notifications
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install indicator-notifications
Log out and log back in. The indicator will automatically appear.

Touchpad

The touchpad indicator allows you to easily disable and enable your laptop’s touchpad — right from the panel. Run the following commands to install it:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:atareao/atareao
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install touchpad-indicator
After installing the indicator, launch it from your Dash.

Hardware Sensors

The hardware sensors indicator shows you information from your system’s hardware sensors, such as the temperatures of your system’s hardware and the speed of its fans. Install it with the following commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:alexmurray/indicator-sensors
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install indicator-sensors
Launch the indicator from the Dash after installing it.

Caffeine

The caffeine indicator allows you to prevent Ubuntu from going to sleep. For example, this may be useful if you’re watching videos in an application that doesn’t automatically inhibit Ubuntu’s sleep behavior. Use the following commands to install it:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:caffeine-developers/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install caffeine
Launch Caffeine from the Dash after installing it.

Keylock

The keylock indicator applet shows you whether your caps lock, num lock, or scroll lock keys are on. Use these commands to install it:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tsbarnes/indicator-keylock
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install indicator-keylock
Launch Indicator-Lockkeys from the dash after installing it.

Do you use another useful indicator applet? Leave a comment and let us know about it.

Disk Usage Analyzer 353

Gnome 353 has gained and a new Disk Usage Analyzer but is not considered as something to highlight. Minor changes mostly in design. What is more anticipated is the upcoming Usage Gnome App which is pushed (I guess) for the release after 360.
Also I discovered an extra view in Power Statistics that shows the AC Adapter.

[1] The new Disk Usage Analyzer first screen

[2] You can scan remote Disks

[3] The treemap chart and a permission denied notice

[4] And the ring chart view, as well as the usual from now on Application Menu

[5] This is the new Power Statistics App where a new AC Adapter tab has been added

353 release seems very boring, the only exciting thing (talking always about interfaces) so far was Empathy. All Gnome Apps had more or less a re-design and are more beautiful; but nothing really special.

What's value of linux being modular

What's value of linux being modular if it needs so many duplicate and different versions of the same libraries.
I am running debian squeeze which has almost 50% packages from wheezy such as xorg stuff, kernel, drm, mesa and some application software. However, accidentally I found that I've bewildering number of duplicate libraries.
