Football Manager 2014 is coming to Linux

Over a year ago, Sports Interactive has informed me that due to small number of users they have no plans to release Football Manager for Linux.

Since the release of Steam for Linux, more and more game companies go into business with Linux games and, recently, the director of the studio Sports Interactive Miles Jacobson has announced via Tweeter that the next version of Football Manager will also be released for Linux.

As Football Manager is probably the most popular and most realistic football manager at the moment, a lot of football fans among Linux users will surely be very happy with this announcement. However, Football Manager 2014 will initially be only released for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and also, the game can not be purchased in every country (e.g. Germany).

SuperX 2.0

Wrishiraj Kaushik has announced the release of SuperX 2.0, an Ubuntu-based desktop Linux distribution with KDE 4.10.2: "This is SuperX 2.0, code-named 'Darwin'. It comes with Linux kernel 3.2 and KDE 4.10.2 by default. For those who want newer kernels, they are available in the repository. SuperX 2.0 is a whole new release of SuperX which differs fundamentally from the 1.x releases. Starting from SuperX 2.0 we are going our own way, making a diversion from our upstream distribution. We still use the Ubuntu code base but from this release we only use the LTS versions and development is done on its solid foundation. But unlike other solid, stability-concerned Linux operating systems, we provide the latest userland software like LibreOffice 4 and KDE 4.10. Starting from Darwin, we are keeping our core stable but will provide latest and greatest applications." Read the rest of the release announcement for more information, screenshots and known issues. Pinguy OS 13.04 Alpha

Antoni Norman has released an initial alpha build of Pinguy OS 13.04, an Ubuntu-based distribution with a customised GNOME 3.8 desktop: "Pinguy OS is still being activity worked on. There has been a release for 12.10 and a 13.04 release is being worked on at the moment. If you want to keep up to date with the development of Pinguy OS it's best to follow the Information thread on the forum. This blog will be mainly for news on the LTS releases. I have decided to keep the 6-month releases as betas/snapshots of what the LTS will become. The 6-month releases will be using bleeding edge software that hasn't been fully tested. For an example the 13.04 release is using Gnome Shell 3.8.1 (something that isn't included in Ubuntu 13.04 by default). The 6-month Pinguy OS releases will be missing features that will be in the final LTS, but the release will be very usable." See this brief blog post for more information. [FIX] Brightness Keys Not Working on a Notebook/Laptop - Ubuntu/Linux Mint

In this tutorial, we will see a solution that may render your brightness keys workable again in a laptop/notebook running Ubuntu/Linux Mint.

Before starting, you should bear in mind that this solution is not meant to fix all laptop or notebook models and is dedicated for users of intel cards for adjusting brightness levels. Also, this tip is only workable on Ubuntu/Linux Mint with GRUB 2.

Getting Started

You can check if you have an intel card by running this command:

 ls /sys/class/backlight/

If the returned outputs show this:

(...) intel_backlight

Then this solution may work for you. In the same terminal window, enter this command:

sudo gedit /etc/default/grub

Find this line:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

Change it to this one:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_backlight=vendor"

Save your file and exit, then run this command to update GRUB 2:

sudo update-grub

Finally, reboot your system.

Good luck!

How to Solve nVidia Video Card Drivers Problems on Ubuntu 12.10

Ubuntu 12.10 has been released but immediately some users started to complain, and rightly so, because of a problem with the video card drivers. In particular, there seems to be a problem for all those who are in possession of some particular model of nVidia video card : it can happen, in fact, that the desktop does not appear after installing the driver experimental nvidia or even those owners . If you use the Open Source driver , however, everything runs smoothly.

must therefore fall back on the driver Open? It is said, there is a (rather more than one) solution to this problem and we will take back to below.

First solution

Press the key combination Ctrl + Alt + F1 to enter the emergency terminal. Log in with your username and password and type:
sudo apt-get install linux-source
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-3.5.0-17-generic

Now uninstall the current driver:
sudo apt-get remove nvidia-current
If it does not, try the command:
sudo apt-get remove nvidia-current-updates
or:
sudo apt-get remove nvidia-experimental-304
reinstalliamoli now (yes, it looks like a joke almost mockingly):
sudo apt-get install nvidia-current-updates
If everything is successful, type:
sudo shutdown-r now
And when you restart you should have solved!

Second solution

this solution is more immediate. Open the terminal of an emergency, press the key combination Ctrl + Alt + F1 and type:
sudo apt-get install nvidia-current nvidia-settings
sudo mv / etc/X11/xorg.conf / etc/X11/xorg.conf.old
sudo nvidia-xconfig
Now restart the whole typing:
sudo shutdown-r now
I beg you, so let us know if you have solved the problem!

How to Fix/Repair ATI Catalyst AMD Video Driver on Ubuntu 12.xx

ATI Catalyst drivers are blocking the system? Have you stopped abruptly installation of the latter, and now you can no longer use the X server Ubuntu 12.10 or Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Quantal? You “forced” a bit ‘too his hand, and your Catalyst refuse to work? Well, then this is just the guide for you: we will see how to restore the drivers AMD / ATI Catalyst using recovery mode Ubuntu.

Maybe you could think that that option boot system was there only as a formality, but it is not! The recovery mode has its uses: it is possible to perform diagnostics, recovery and system repairs regardless of the damage it caused during the various sessions of use. E ‘for this reason that, today, upubuntu suggests how to use the recovery mode if the ATI Catalyst drivers suddenly they stopped working, something that happens regularly – for example – after a change kernel or operating system upgrade.
First, the selection screen of GRUB, if we have a version of GRUB less than 2.0 we select
Into Our OS-with-our-kernel (recovery mode / recovery mode)
such as
Ubuntu, with 3.xx-y.generic (recovery mode)
and give ENTER. Or, if we GRUB 2.0, have to bring us in ”Advanced options for Ubuntu”: find there the recovery mode! (Small tip: if GRUB does not appear, start the computer by pressing and holding the SHIFT key after the BIOS POST).
Wait kernel initialization after that, in the next window, select ”Network” (will allow you to enable the network). The system will notify you that your disk will be remounted in read / write mode: you confirm and wait for the loading.
At this point we get back to the main screen, hence selected root (Open a root shell) and dates sent. At this point, the steps are the same people who normally perform from terminal to install the ATI drivers. Eye could happen that the layout of the keyboard is the American one. First, for the avoidance of doubt, a moment update the system with the commands
Into sudo apt-get
update sudo apt-get upgrade

And now, let’s install the ATI drivers (the last are the 12.10) by following the steps in this guide.
After the procedure, we can exit the shell by typing the command of recovery
Into exit
And then selecting from the main window ”Resume” – “Restore normal startup.”
