How to Install ClassicMenu Indicator 0.08 from PPA in Ubuntu 13.10/13.04

ClassicMenu Indicator is a useful application indicator that once installed and executed will show a menu in the top panel of Ubuntu Unity that allows users to easily and quickly access system tools and software without the need to use the Dash menu.

For PPA installation under Ubuntu 13.10/13.04, enter these commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:diesch/testing 

sudo apt-get update 

sudo apt-get install classicmenu-indicator

Use the dash menu to start it:

For other distributions, you can install it manually by entering this sequence of commands:

cd /tmp

Once installed, the application will be added automatically to the list of software that will be started automatically after you log in. If you want to disable it, start the dash menu and open "Startup Applications":

OpenMandriva Lx 2013.0 RC2

The second and final release candidate for the inaugural stable release of OpenMandriva Lx is now available for download and testing: "And here it comes - a week after RC1, OpenMandriva 2013.0 Lx RC2 is out on schedule. How to Check 3D Acceleration (FPS) in Ubuntu/Linux Mint

In this guide, we will see some commands needed for checking  3D Acceleration / FPS for both Nvidia and AMD graphics cards under the following distributions:

• Ubuntu 13.10/13.04/12.10/12.04 or older
• Linux Mint 15/14/13 or older

If you have more commands and tools that are not listed here, please mention them below (comment form).

Getting Started

First of all, install this dependency via the terminal:

sudo apt-get install mesa-utils

Before running the commands below, make sure 3D acceleration is enabled or not by entering this command:

/usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p

1. Glxinfo

You can use glxinfo to check 3d acceleration and rendering. Here are some commands you need to run from the terminal:

glxinfo -i | grep render

or

 glxinfo -i | grep direct

or

glxinfo -i | grep openGL

The output returned will give you information about your graphics card (AMD or Nvidia).

2. Glxgears

You can also use glxgears to test 3D Acceleration (FPS). Simply run this command:

glxgears

or

glxgears -info

 3. xvinfo

You can also use "xvinfo" to check information about your video card. You can run it with this command:

xvinfo

4. For owners of AMD (ATI) graphics cards, you can use this command to check your graphical performance:

fglrxinfo

or

fgl_glxgears

5. Glxspheres

To be able to use Glxspheres under Ubuntu/Linux Mint, you need first to install it as follows:

Installation (64-bit)

Via the terminal, issue these commands:

cd /tmp 

wget http://goo.gl/L7rsGZ -O virtualgl_2.3.3_amd64.deb 

sudo dpkg -i --force-depends virtualgl_2.3.3_amd64.deb

Chakra GNU/Linux 2013.09

Korora 19 Beta

Football Manager 2014 is coming to Linux

Over a year ago, Sports Interactive has informed me that due to small number of users they have no plans to release Football Manager for Linux.

Since the release of Steam for Linux, more and more game companies go into business with Linux games and, recently, the director of the studio Sports Interactive Miles Jacobson has announced via Tweeter that the next version of Football Manager will also be released for Linux.

As Football Manager is probably the most popular and most realistic football manager at the moment, a lot of football fans among Linux users will surely be very happy with this announcement. However, Football Manager 2014 will initially be only released for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and also, the game can not be purchased in every country (e.g. Germany).

How to Record Your Android Device's Screen From Ubuntu 13.04/12.10 and Linux Mint 15/14

Getting Started

Pinguy OS 13.04 Alpha

Antoni Norman has released an initial alpha build of Pinguy OS 13.04, an Ubuntu-based distribution with a customised GNOME 3.8 desktop: "Pinguy OS is still being activity worked on. There has been a release for 12.10 and a 13.04 release is being worked on at the moment. Zentyal 3.1 (Beta)

José Antonio Calvo has announced the availability of the first development build of the upcoming Zentyal 3.2 stable release, a Linux distribution for small business servers. Like the project's 3.0 release, the new version is still based on Ubuntu's latest long-term support (LTS) release. To Install Rdio install the client on Ubuntu 13.04/12.10/12.04 and Mint 15/14/13 , Open Terminal (Press Ctrl+Alt+T) and copy the following commands in the Terminal:

once installed Rdio just start it and enter the account to access the service.

As an alternative to Rdio we can also install Nuvola Player client that also supports Rdio and also provides an excellent integration of Ubuntu Linux.

Install the Italian Radio on Radio Tray in Ubuntu 13.04 Raring

Radio Tray is one of the most popular Linux users to listen to web radio directly from your Linux distribution. Special features of Radio Tray is to be easy to use and non-invasive because once you start going to add an applet in our panel and from there we will be able to add and manage categories for our favorite web radio.

It supports most popular formats such as m3u. pls ess being written in python we can install any Linux desktop environment such as Gnome Shell, KDE, Xfce, LXDE Cinnamon, etc. Mate DE. In recent years lffl has provided a PPA which allowed to install Radio Tray with already a collection of the major Italian radio such as Radio Rai, Radio Deejay, Radio 105, etc..

Given the many demands of the deb packages we decided to make an exception to the rule that does not give the packages but the list with the web radio constantly updated so that it can be installed in any Linux distribution.

I also remember that you can create a list with your favorite web radio by placing links that can be found for example from this portal.

To install the Italian Radio on Radio Tray in Ubuntu, Debian, Arch Linux, Fedora, etc. the first thing to do is to install Radio Tray application usually found in the repositories of major Linux distributions.

For Ubuntu, for example, just start Ubuntu or Ubuntu Software Center Apps Directory once installed the Radio Tray are moving and we will find the list of various foreign web radio.

What we need to do is to close Radio Tray and start the terminal and type:

• wget https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/964512/lffl/bookmarks.xml
• mv bookmarks.xml ~/.local/share/radiotray

Once this is done reboot Radio Tray Italian Radio and here are collected in categories.

If you have any web radio that does not work you can report it, correct it promptly list it so that it remains up to date and running. To update the list, just repeat the above procedure.

Skolelinux 7.0 Alpha 0

Petter Reinholdtsen has announced the availability of the initial alpha build of Skolelinux (a project also known as "Debian-Edu"), a distribution designed for schools and based on the upcoming release of Debian GNU/Linux 7.0: "The Debian-Edu / Skolelinux project is still going strong and made its first 'Wheezy'-based release today. In this tutorial, we will see a solution that may render your brightness keys workable again in a laptop/notebook running Ubuntu/Linux Mint.

Before starting, you should bear in mind that this solution is not meant to fix all laptop or notebook models and is dedicated for users of intel cards for adjusting brightness levels. Also, this tip is only workable on Ubuntu/Linux Mint with GRUB 2.

Getting Started

You can check if you have an intel card by running this command:

 ls /sys/class/backlight/

If the returned outputs show this:

(...) intel_backlight

Then this solution may work for you. In the same terminal window, enter this command:

sudo gedit /etc/default/grub

Find this line:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

Change it to this one:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_backlight=vendor"

Save your file and exit, then run this command to update GRUB 2:

sudo update-grub

Finally, reboot your system.

Pardus Linux 2013 "Community"

Following the release of the "Corporate" edition last month, the Pardus development team has now also released the "Community" flavour of Pardus Linux 2013 (or "1.0" as it is called in the announcement). How to Solve nVidia Video Card Drivers Problems on Ubuntu 12.10

Ubuntu 12.10 has been released but immediately some users started to complain, and rightly so, because of a problem with the video card drivers. In particular, there seems to be a problem for all those who are in possession of some particular model of nVidia video card : it can happen, in fact, that the desktop does not appear after installing the driver experimental nvidia or even those owners . If you use the Open Source driver , however, everything runs smoothly.

First solution

Press the key combination Ctrl + Alt + F1 to enter the emergency terminal. Log in with your username and password and type:

sudo apt-get install linux-source

Now uninstall the current driver:

sudo apt-get remove nvidia-current

If it does not, try the command:

sudo apt-get remove nvidia-current-updates

or:

sudo apt-get remove nvidia-experimental-304

reinstalliamoli now (yes, it looks like a joke almost mockingly):

sudo apt-get install nvidia-current-updates

If everything is successful, type:

sudo shutdown-r now

And when you restart you should have solved!

Second solution

this solution is more immediate. Open the terminal of an emergency, press the key combination Ctrl + Alt + F1 and type:

sudo apt-get install nvidia-current nvidia-settings
sudo mv / etc/X11/xorg.conf / etc/X11/xorg.conf.old
sudo nvidia-xconfig

Now restart the whole typing:

sudo shutdown-r now
