GhostBSD 11.1-RC1

GhostBSD is a desktop-oriented operating system based on FreeBSD. The project has published a new release candidate for the 11.1 series, GhostBSD 11.1-RC1. The new development snapshot removes GRUB from the system installer to prevent a number of bugs and ZFS volume configuration has been updated. "This last development release of GhostBSD 11.1 is ready for testing. All MATE and Xfce images are available only for 64-bit architectures. For some of you, it might be shock that we are dropping i386 it is a decision that was hard to make. We hope for those that need i386 will find refuge to another BSD project. On this RC release, we need help to find more problems. GhostBSD 11.1 is our first release featuring our own software package repository. What changed in 11.1 RC1: We removed GRUB from the installer for 11.1 as it has caused us a lot of problems, and this is why the release is late; ZFS configuration. Issues that got fixed: The partition list was not deleted when pressing back; the installer was not listing ZFS disk correctly." GhostBSD 3.0-RC4

Development Release: GhostBSD 3.0-RC4^Eric Turgeon has announced the availability of the fourth release candidate for GhostBSD 3.0, a FreeBSD-based operating system for the desktop: "A fourth development release candidate for GhostBSD 3.0 is now available for testing. The last development release was too buggy due to some last minute changes. I decide to release another testing release which might contain some bugs and other problems, which have not been discovered during beta tests so we still only encourage you to run it only on non-critical systems. All /home/user file and folder have been fixed (this was causing LibreOffice and other application to fail). We downsized the i386 Openbox image to fit on a CD." m0n0wall 1.34

Manuel Kasper has announced the release of m0n0wall 1.34, a tiny FreeBSD-based operating system for firewalls: "m0n0wall 1.34 released. m0n0wall 1.34 is a maintenance release with low-priority security fixes for CSRF/XSS issues in the webGUI. Changes in this release: eliminate modifying GETs from webGUI pages; make rule moving and deletion on shaper rules page work like for firewall rules; add csrf-magic for CSRF protection in webGUI; fix potential XSS in diag_ping.php and diag_traceroute.php; increase key size of auto-generated webGUI certificates to 2,048 bits; update default webGUI certificate/key; remove domain name handling from dhclient-script and change ARP command not to use sed (not used/available in m0n0wall); change virtualHW version to 7 for VMWare image to avoid errors in ESX 4." DragonFly BSD 3.2.1

 Justin Sherrill has announced the release of DragonFly BSD 3.2.1, an updated version of the BSD operating system originally forked from FreeBSD 4: "The 3.2.1 release of DragonFly BSD is available now. Significant work has gone into the scheduler to improve performance, using postgres benchmarking as a measure. See the PDF of graphed results to see the improvements. DragonFly should be now one of the best selections for PostgreSQL and other databases. USB4BSD has been incorporated into this release. More USB devices are compatible with DragonFly, and xhci (USB 3.0) users may be able to take full advantage of their newer hardware. FreeNAS 8.3.0

Josh Paetzel has announced the release of FreeNAS 8.3.0, a free and open-source Network-Attached Storage (NAS) operating system based on FreeBSD: "The FreeNAS development team is pleased to announce the immediate availability of FreeNAS 8.3.0-RELEASE. FreeNAS 8.3.0 is based on FreeBSD 8.3 with version 28 of the ZFS file system. This is a major milestone in FreeNAS development, bringing in the plugin system with ZFS version 28. Development of the FreeNAS 8.2 branch has come to a halt, as both ZFS version 15 as well as FreeBSD 8.2 are no longer supported. NetBSD 6.0 RC1

 

 Jeff Rizzo has announced the availability of the first release candidate for NetBSD 6.0: "On behalf of NetBSD developers, I'm happy to announce the availability of the first release candidate of NetBSD 6.0. A number of improvements and fixes have been made since NetBSD 6.0_BETA2. Here's a sampling: fixed bugs in iscsid target handling and with large writes to iscsi devices; fixed some amd64 trap-handling issues; lots of fixes and improvements for npf(4); renamed wake(8) to wakeonlan(8); pass 'boothowto' from the bootloader to the kernel on sparc/sparc64; various PUFFS/libperfuse fixes in support of glusterfs on NetBSD; update BIND to 9.9.1-P2...." Kris Moore has announced the availability of the first release candidate for PC-BSD 9.1: "The RC1 images for the upcoming PC-BSD 9.1 are now available for i386 and amd64 architectures. This release candidate provides both users and developers a means to test out new features in the upcoming PC-BSD 9.1 release. This snapshot may contain buggy code and features, so users are encouraged to run it only on non-critical systems. Changes since the previous beta: Based on FreeBSD 9.1-RC1; added new functionality to the warden client - you can now schedule daily or hourly creation of jail snapshots; improve the shutdown scripts to make sure we unmount, even if the jail was manually stopped; added Active Directory / LDAP backend and GUI utility...." FreeBSD 9.1-RC1

Ken Smith has announced the availability of the first release candidate for FreeBSD 9.1: "The first release candidate of the 9.1-RELEASE release cycle is now available on the FTP servers for amd64, i386 and powerpc64. Current plans are for there to be one more RC build, followed by the release itself. If you notice any problems you can report them through the normal Gnats PR system or on the 'stable' mailing list. With both the doc and ports repositories now moved to SVN it has been decided to not export the 9.1 release branch activity to CVS. So csup/cvsup update mechanisms are not available for updating to 9.1-RC1. If you would like to use SVN the branch to use is releng/9.1. FreeNAS 8.3.0-BETA1

Josh Paetzel has announced the availability of the first beta build of FreeNAS 8.3.0: "The FreeNAS development team is pleased to announce the availability of FreeNAS 8.3.0-BETA1. This is the first public release of the 8.3.0 branch of FreeNAS, which upgrades the underlying base system of FreeNAS to FreeBSD 8.3-RELEASE-p7. This update brings with it Version 28 of the ZFS file system, as well as a number of updates to the drivers and utilities in the base system. FreeNAS 8.2.0 brought with it the ability to install plugins, this functionality is present in FreeNAS 8.3.0 as well. At the moment upgrading the plugin jail to the version included with FreeNAS 8.3.0-BETA1 will cause plugins to stop working and will require re-installation and reconfiguration of all plugins to resume normal operation. GhostBSD LXDE 3.0 Beta 1 Available for Testing

GhostBSD LXDE, a FreeBSD-based operating system based on LXDE desktop environment, is now at version 3.0 Beta 1.

GhostBSD 3.0 Beta 1 is now available in the LXDE flavor. The developers already have a GNOME 2 distribution launched and are planning to release another one with Gnome 3 support.

FreeNAS 8.2.0

After four beta versions and one release candidate, FreeNAS 8.2.0 is available for download, which is a free, open-source, Network-Attached Storage (NAS) operating system based on FreeBSD. From the release announcement: "The FreeNAS development team is pleased to announce the immediate availability of FreeNAS 8.2.0-RELEASE. FreeNAS 8.2.0-RELEASE is the first release on new branch of code that incorporates tighter integration between the ZFS command line and the FreeNAS GUI. This release also features the ability to run arbitrary services and interact with them through the FreeNAS GUI in a FreeBSD jail. This jail allows a wide range of third party software to be run on top of FreeNAS, using the PBI format from PC-BSD or FreeBSD packages or ports, as well as official FreeNAS plugins. Additional features include: support for iSCSI target reload; GUI support for SAS and FC multipath hardware; WebShell accessible from the FreeNAS web interface; ZFS scrubs are configurable from the GUI; a newer web toolkit is used in the GUI, enabling use of mobile browsers; an autotuning script tunes ZFS for the hardware it's running on." FreeBSD 9.1-BETA1

Although a bit behind the schedule, Ken Smith today announced the first beta version of FreeBSD 9.1, the upcoming release of the project's stable branch: "The first test build of the 9.1-RELEASE release cycle is now available on the FTP servers for amd64, i386, powerpc64, and sparc64. We hope this will be the only BETA build, to be followed by two Release Candidate builds and then the release itself. If you notice any problems you can report them through the normal Gnats PR system or here on the -stable mailing list. If you would like to use csup/cvsup mechanisms to do a source-based update of an existing system the branch tag to use is 'RELENG_9'. If you would like to use SVN instead use 'stable/9'. FreeNAS 8.2.0 RC1 Available for Testing

FreeNAS, a free implementation of a minimal FreeBSD distribution, has just reached version 8.2.0 RC1.

FreeNAS 8.2.0 RC1 has introduced a large number of functional changes in comparison with the 8.0.x branch.

Highlights of FreeNAS 8.2.0 RC1:

· Missing tree icons when addding/viewing NTP servers and tunables, were added;
· Icons for mountpoints, plugins, shell, and sysctls, have been added;
· An alert if jail IP is unreachable has been implemented;
· Check and alert for non-optimal multipath states have been added;
· Options for save debug have been added;
· Improvements to save debug have been implemented.
