Demand for Linux hosting servers increased in Q2 despite the downfall of the whole server market



According to the recent report published by IDC this week,  worldwide server market revenues decreased 4.8 percent year-over-year in Q2 2012. This is the third consecutive quarter of year-over-year revenue declines for the server market. The market is "working its way through a number of technology transitions impacting customer demand for x86, Unix and mainframe-class systems," said Matt Eastwood, group vice president and general manager for enterprise platforms at IDC, in a released statement. "Economic uncertainty is weighing on the market and the sales cycle is lengthening."

Unix hosting servers and non-x86 servers had the poorest showing this quarter. Unix hosting  server revenue declined 20.3 percent year over year. Non-x86 server revenue declined 19.4 percent year over year. However, bladed hosting servers and Linux dedicated servers saw improved demand. IDC attributes the increase of Linux hardware revenue (a 1.7 percent year-over-year gain) to the growing demands of high-performance computing and cloud infrastructure deployments. Bladed server factory revenue was up 6.3 percent year over year, as were bladed server shipment numbers (up 4.1 percent from Q2 2011).

Hewlett-Packard Co. and IBM Corp. shared the No. 1 spot for factory revenue share this quarter, although both companies saw year-over-year factory revenue declines (of 5 percent and 8.2 percent, respectively). Dell Inc. took third place in factory revenue share, helped by a 5.9 percent revenue increase compared with Q2 2011.

Quick review for SING , first distro of 31 Flavors of Fun project



SING is the first distro released by Todd Robinson for his 31 Flavors of Fun ( there are 4 available distros already). I was curious so I downloaded and put it into a USB drive anyway to test it. Here is a quick review for SING with some screenshots of this distro in live CD mode:

The size of SING is pretty big (over 1.7 GB) so you will need a DVD or a 2GB+ USB to test it, I used Unetbootin to create the bootable USB and got no problem at all.

The desktop environment of SING seems to be Gnome 2 and is highly decorated with an AWN dock at the top of the screen and a tint2 panel at the bottom. The AWN dock is quite well arranged with many applets and has several effects enabled, although it takes too much vertical space IMO. The main color theme of SING is brown and as you can see in the screenshot below, there are many shortcut folders on the desktop by default:



SING performs decently when it comes to hardware consumption, at idle, it eats up around 200 MB of RAM, which is pretty low in today's hardware capacity. However, its still not the lightest distro for sure.

Good old Nautilus file manager is used in SING but the theme is quite outdated:


With 1.7GB in  size, there are a lot of preinstalled applications in SING. For internet use, besides IceWeasel, you also have Pidgin, Skype, Dropbox and IceDove (for mail client ):


For office and graphic work, you have the LibreOffice bundle, Evince, GIMP and several other apps. One thing I like about SING is that this is the first distro I've known that includes an offline dictionary (GoldenDict) by default:

 
For multimedia, you have Audacious and VLC to handle everything. However, due to some unknown bug, the sound doesnt work for me. Perhaps it's the problem when you want to create a full distro in such a transient time without proper testing. Flash is preinstalled by default but the sound still doesnt work:

Angry Birds Added 15 New Levels For iOS Users



New version of Angry Birds 2.2 hit on the market recently with additional 15 new levels for iPhone & iPad users causing propelling challenges for the game lovers. This newly included section is comprised of 15 surf & turf levels where you are required to sling shot angry birds at the miserable pigges. These newly added levels of version 2.2 are easy in initial levels then become difficult as you move on with your game.
  
However, the catch of the game is power-ups that Rovio has engrossed into the new levels i.e “Birdquake”, ‘Sling Scope’ & ‘King Sling’, to name a few. Moreover Rovio has also promised to provide its iOS users with free power-ups everyday if they will upgrade their game on the new version of 2.2 which is available for the users at the meager cost of $0.99 for iPhone and $2.99 for the iPad users. In addition, this newly introduced HD version 2.2 of angry birds is not only loaded with more fun but also supports retina display of new iPad. Lastly, bare in mind, these updates and upgrades are for iOS users only but Android users would also get their hands on the latest surf & turf levels in real time soon.

HOW TO GET RID OF UN-NECESSARY FRIEND-STORIES FROM ‘YOUR’ FACEBOOK NEWSFEED



Since the arrival of timeline layout on FACEBOOK along with many other ‘Me-Too’ features of Google+. It has been noticed that whenever you go to your newsfeed, you will figure out a lot of unnecessary friend-stories i.e. be it their liking a stuff, commenting over something or else. All would be appearing on your newsfeed to further aggravate the clutter.
 
So as a solution, we suggest you not to look up for any browser extension to get rid of the mess because FACEBOOK has a built-in solution for your dilemma. All you need to do is,

  1. Choose a Friend list out of the given/created lists on the leftmost side bar
  2. Choose ‘Manage List’ button on the upper-right corner of the selected list
  3. Click on ‘Choose Update Type’ option
  4. Click on ‘Manage List’ button again
  5. Now, you can choose & control the kinds of friend-updates, you would like to see in your newsfeed

Use the Magic SysRq Key on Linux to Fix Frozen X Servers, Cleanly Reboot, and Run Other Low-Level Commands


On Linux, the magic SysRq key can send commands directly to the Linux kernel. You can use it to recover from freezes or cleanly restart your system, even if nothing appears to be responding.
The magic SysRq key is implemented as part of Linux’s keyboard driver – it will work as long as the Linux kernel is still running. Only a kernel panic should disable this key combination.


Using the Magic SysRq Key

The SysRq key is located near the Scroll Lock key on your keyboard – the Sys Rq key is generally the same as your Print Screen key. The “magic” SysRq combination is Alt+SysRq.
To use this key combination, your Linux kernel must have been compiled with the CONFIG_MAGIC_SYSRQ compile option – most Linux distributions will have this enabled by default. Assuming it’s compiled into your kernel, it can be enabled or disabled on a running system by changing the value of /proc/sys/kernel/sysrq. To check if it’s enabled, run the following command:
cat /proc/sys/kernel/sysrq
If you see a “1”, the magic SysRq key is enabled.

If you see a “0”, you’ll have to enable it yourself by running the following command as root:
echo “1” > /proc/sys/kernel/sysrq

Dealing With a Frozen X Server

If your X server (the program that runs your graphical desktop) freezes, you may find yourself unable to use your system. There are a few magic SysRq commands that can help:
  • Alt + SysRq + r – Takes the keyboard out of raw mode, taking control away from the X server. After running this combination, you should be able to use the Ctrl + Alt + F1 (and other F-key) keyboard shortcuts to switch to another console and restart X.
  • Alt + SysRq + k – Kills all programs on the current virtual console, including X. You can also enable the Ctrl+Alt+Backspace keyboard shortcut in Ubuntu’s keyboard preferences to restart your X server – however, this shortcut is implemented by the X server and may not always work.

Cleanly Restarting Your System

Used in sequence, some of these actions can be used to cleanly end processes, flush data to disk, unmount all file systems, and restart your computer. To perform this process, press and hold the Alt + SysRq key combination and – while holding the Alt and SysRq keys down — type the following keys in order, pausing for several seconds in between each key:

The mnemonic “Raising Elephants Is So Utterly Boring” is often used to remember this sequence. Here’s what each key does:
  • r – Puts the keyboard into raw mode, taking control of it away from the X server.
  • e – Sends the terminate signal to all processes, asking them to end gracefully.
  • i – Sends the kill signal to all processes, forcing them to end immediately.
  • s – Flushes data from your cache to disk.
  • u – Remounts all file systems read-only.
  • b – Reboots your computer.

More Commands

Here are some other actions you can perform with the magic SysRq key. To perform an action, press and hold the Alt + SysRq keys while typing the letter:
  • n – Resets the nice level (priority) of all high and realtime priority processes.
  • f – Calls oom_kill, which will kill a memory-hogging process.
  • o – Shuts off the computer.
There are other actions, but they may be more useful to developers than the average Linux geek. For more information on the magic SysRq key – and a full list of actions you can perform – consult the sysrq.txt file included with the Linux kernel.

2 new mini Linux boxes



After the success of  Raspberry Pi, it seems mini PCs that run Linux has become a technology trend.  Recently, 2 new mini Linux-enabled PCs have joined the party.

The Oval Elephant

This is the first time I have ever heard about Linaro Linux but this is the distro that Oval Elephant can run ( although the default OS will be Android). Oval Elephant costs only $72.5 and comes with a single-core 1.5GHz AllWinner A10 Cortex A8 ARM, 1GB of DDR3 high-capacity memory, WiFi connectivity, a MALI400 graphics processing chip, and 1080p HDMI video output, with support for 2160p. This is how Nautilus looks in SolusOS



I just recently stumbled on the article "This is how new Nautilus looks in Ubuntu" on Ubuntu Vibes. It seems there will be a lot of changes for Nautilus file manager in the next release of Ubuntu. You can read the article on Ubuntu Vibes for your info. But here is how Nautilus may look in the future (photo from Ubuntu Vibes):



I dont know what you think about this new look of Nautilus but from the comments on Ubuntu Vibes, it seems most people dont like the change.

However, Ubuntu is not the only distro in which Nautilus will be changed. Ikey Doherty has also modified Nautilus for his distro - SolusOS and this will be the default Nautilus for the upcoming SolusOS 2. Here are two screenshots of Nautilus in SolusOS:

Rodent file manager is revolutionizing your ways!



Nautilus is a core application of the GNOME desktop environment, and is the one and only choice for many users that feel comfortable with it. I imagine that many people have never even tried to use another file manager, or don’t know about any worthy alternatives.
As expandable and configurable as Nautilus may be, it doesn’t meet the needs of power users or everyone’s preferences. If you are one of those, why don’t you try Rodent?

Why should(n’t) I use it?

Rodent is fast and fully featured. You will find that some things are done in a different way, but efficiency is not compromised in any case. All you need to do is give Rodent some time to get used to what is going on on this file manager, and Rodent will serve you back.
Rodent offers some unique features that everyone would find interesting and quite useful like the application launcher that you can access just by right clicking anywhere:
As you can see, right clicking in to empty space allows you to access everything you could possibly need in a fast, simple and efficient way. Useful things like “Open terminal here” that Nautilus needs an extension for, are offered by default in Rodent.
The first thing that might alienate you are the icons that Rodent uses, but you can easily make the file manager use the system selected icons (Faience in my case) through the “Personal Settings”.
Changing the icon set and size from the lower right bar made things quite more coherent with the rest of my system.
The powerful capabilities of Rodent show when you need to review, run, playback, or open a file. Rodent preview an image or a document when the cursor passes above it, allowing you to have a quick look of what that file contains. The same happens with folders and their content that are presented as a file list on a pop-up. (Click images for larger)
Rodent is not hiding its half-console nature. Almost everything you’ll do from copy-paste to renaming a file will make the bottom terminal of the file manager show up and allow you to write whatever command you need. Rodent is fully functional in both ways!
Rodent is not a suitable file manager for the Linux noobies, but it certainly worths the attention of every advanced user. It is built for those who know what they are doing, and want to have power on their hands easily available. It is a fast, modern file manager that will let you do what you want in the most efficient way.
I suggest everyone try Rodent for a week, and see how it goes (and come here and tell us about it). I will!

Canonical and Zentyal to Provide a Small Business Server


Zentyal has announced a worldwide agreement with Canonical to offer an alternative to proprietary IT infrastructure for SMBs (Small Business Servers).

This means that Zentyal's operating system, which is based on Ubuntu, will become supported by Canonical, with all which entails from this agreement, such as support for small and medium businesses who already use Zentyal's OS.

This agreement allows Zentyal and Authorized Zentyal Partners to provide complete Linux infrastructure solutions for small and medium-sized enterprises” said Ignacio Correas, CEO of Zentyal, and continued “although Linux in the enterprise is nothing new, comparable fully vendor-backed infrastructure solutions for SMBs did not exist until this agreement.

This agreement between the two companies aims to cover an important niche in the market by satisfying the growing IT needs of the SMB sector.

The future of AMD’s Fusion APUs: Kaveri will fully share memory between CPU and GPU


AMD is hosting its Fusion Developer Summit this week, and the overarching theme is heterogeneous computing and the convergence of the CPU and GPU. During the initial keynote yesterday, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Global Business Units (for AMD) Dr. Lisa Su stepped on stage to talk about the company’s future with HSA (Heterogeneous System Architectures).
One of the slides she presented showed off the company’s Fusion APU roadmap which included the Trinity APU’s successor — known as Kaveri. Kaveri will be able to deliver up to 1TFLOPS of (likely single precision) compute performance, thanks to its Graphics Core Next (GCN) GPU and a Steamroller-based CPU. The really interesting reveal, though, is that Kaveri will feature fully shared memory between the GPU and CPU.


AMD has been moving in the direction of a unified CPU+GPU chip for a long time — starting with the Llano APU — and Kaveri is the next step in achieving that goal of true convergence. AMD announced at the keynote that “we are betting the company on APUs,” and spent considerable time talking up the benefits of the heterogeneous processor. Trinity, the company’s latest APU available to consumers, beefs up the GPU and CPU interconnects with the Radeon Memory Bus and FCL connections. These allow the GPU access to system memory and the CPU to access the GPU frame buffer through a 256-bit and 128-bit wide bus (per channel, each direction) respectively. This allows the graphics core and x86 processor modules to access the same memory areas and communicate with each other.
Kaveri will take that idea even further with shared memory and a unified address space. The company is not yet talking about how it will specifically achieve this with hardware, but a shared on-die cache is not out of the question — a layer that has been noticeably absent from AMD’s APUs. Phil Rogers, AMD Corporate Fellow, did state that the CPU and GPU would be able to share data between them from a single unified address space. This will prevent the relatively time-intensive need to copy data from CPU-addressable memory to GPU-addressable memory space — and will vastly improve performance as a result.
AMD gave two examples of programs and situations where the heterogeneous architecture can improve performance — and how shared memory can push performance even further. The first example involved face detection algorithms. The algorithm involves multiple stages where the image is scaled down and the search square remains the same. In each stage, the algorithm looks for facial features (eyes, chins, ears, nose, etc.) If it does not find facial features, it discards the image and continues searching further scaled down images.

The first stage of the workload is very parallel so the GPU is well-suited to the task. In the first few stages, the GPU performs well, but as the stages advance (and there are more and more dead ends), the performance of the GPU falls until it is eventually much slower than the CPU at the task. It was at this point that Phil Rogers talked up the company’s heterogeneous architecture and the benefits of a “unified, shared, coherent memory.” By allowing the individual parts to play to their strengths, the company estimates 2.5 times the performance and up to a 40% reduction in power usage versus running the algorithm on either the CPU or GPU only. AMD achieved the (best) numbers by using the GPU for the first three stages and the CPU for the remaining stages (where it was more efficient). It was further made possible because they did not have to worry about copying the data to/from the CPU and GPU for processing which would have slowed down performance too much for HSA to be beneficial.


The company’s second HSA demo drilled down into the time-intensive data copying issue even more. To show off how the shared memory cuts down of execution time, and solves the shared memory problem (of course), the company presented a server application called Memcached (mem cache D) as an example. Memcached is a table of files kept in system memory (i.e. ECC DDR3) that they use store() and get() functions on to serve up components of web pages without needing to pull the data from (much slower) disk memory.
When the get() function is ported to the GPU, performance of the application is improved greatly due to its proficiency at parallel work. However, the program then runs into a performance bottleneck due to a needed data copy operation to bring the data and instructions from the CPU to the GPU for processing.

Interestingly, the discrete GPU is the fastest at processing the data, but in the end is the slowest because it spends the majority of its execution time moving the data to and from the GPU and CPU memory areas. While the individual hardware is available to accelerate workloads in programs that use both CPU and GPU for processing, a great deal of execution time is spent moving data from the memory the CPU uses to the GPU memory (especially for discrete GPUs).
Trinity improves upon this by having the GPU on the same die as the CPU and providing a fast bus with direct access to system memory (the same system memory the CPU uses, though not necessarily the same address spaces). Kaveri will further improve upon this by giving both types of processors fast access to the same (single) set of data in memory. Cutting out the most time-intensive task will let programs like Memcached hit performance potentials and run as fast as the hardware will allow. In that way, unified and shared memory is a good thing, and will open up avenues to performance gains beyond what can be achieved by Moore’s law and additional CPU cores can alone. Allowing the GPU and CPU to simultaneously work from the same data set opens a lot of interesting doors for programmers to speed up workloads and manipulate data.

While AMD and the newly-formed HSA Foundation (currently AMD, ARM, Imagination Technology, MediaTek, and Texas Instruments) are pushing heterogeneous computing the hardest, it is technology that will be beneficial to everyone. The industry is definitely moving towards a more blended processing environment, something that began with the rise of specialty GPGPU workstation programs and is now starting to integrate itself with consumer applications. Standards like C++ AMP, OpenCL, and Nvidia’s CUDA languages harness the graphics cards for certain tasks. More and more programs are using the GPU for certain tasks (even if it’s just drawing and managing the UI), and as developers jump on board it should accelerate even more towards using components to their fullest on the software side. On the hardware side of things, we are already seeing integration of GPUs into the CPU die and specialty application processors (at least in mobile SoCs). Such varied configurations are becoming common and are continuing to evolve in a combined architecture direction.The mobile industry is a good example of HSA catching on with new system-on-a-chip processors coming out continuously and mobile operating systems that harness GPU horsepower to assist the ARM CPU cores. AMD isn’t just looking at low power devices, however — it’s pushing for “one (HSA) chip to rule them all” solutions that combine GPU cores with CPU cores (and even ARM cores!) that process what they are best at and give the best user experiences.
The overall transition of hardware and software that fully takes advantage of both processing types is still a ways off but we are getting closer everyday. Heterogeneous computing is the future, and assuming most software developers can be made to recognize the benefits and program to take advantage of the new chips, I’m all for it. When additional CPU cores and smaller process nodes stop making the cut, heterogeneous computing is where the industry will look for performance gains.

HTC One S Snapdragon processor downgraded in some markets


The chronic shortage of Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processors means that HTC has been forced to fit the One S handset with an older chipset in some territories.
The Taiwanese has confirmed that the previous generation S3 processor occupy new handsets in the Asia-Pacific region (save South Korea and Japan) and in some European countries.
US and UK users aren't affected by the shortage, which has already delayed handsets like the Asus PadFone.
HTC says it will mark the One S devices featuring the S3 and the S4 so customers know which version they're receiving.

Pure processing power

In terms of pure processing power, the dual-core Snapdragon S3 is actually faster, clocked at 1.7GHz as opposed to 1.5Ghz on the Snapdragon S4.
However, the newer chip brings faster Adreno 320 graphics for gaming, supports 4G LTE connectivity and is kinder on battery life than the S3.
It is thought that the Samsung Galaxy S3 will, for its US incarnation, also boast the S3 chipset, rather than the quad-core version launched in the UK, because of the 4G LTE support.

Hard drive prices won’t fall until 2014

hard drive The price of traditional hard drive storage isn’t likely to come down to the levels seen in the first half of last year for at least 18 months. That’s the opinion of industry analysts at IHS iSuppli, who have released a report today on the subject.
It’s almost a year since the floods in Thailand which damaged many key factories owned by Western Digital and the like, which caused the cost of drives to double and even treble at retail as stocks ran short. While prices have fallen in recent months, they’re still considerably more expensive than they were this time last year, and you can expect to pay up to £100 or for a decent 1TB drive still.
Even the cheapest terabyte drives are around 25% more expensive than they were at their lowest cost.

Previously, analysts had expected prices to have returned to pre-2011 levels by now as most production facilities have been operational since December. IHS says that in the next quarter, shipments of drives will increase year on year for the first time since last July.
Unfortunately, other factors are now coming in to play. Most notable is the fact that just two companies now control the vast majority of the market, lowering competition and reducing the incentive to bring end user prices back down.
In a press statement, IHS’ Fang Zhang said:
“HDD manufacturers now have greater pricing power than they did in 2011, allowing them to keep ASPs steady. With the two mega-mergers between Seagate/Samsung and Western Digital/Hitachi GST, the two top suppliers held 85 percent of HDD market share in the first quarter 2012. This was up from 62 percent in the third quarter of 2011, before the mergers. The concentration of market share has resulted in an oligarchy where the top players can control pricing and are able to keep ASPs at a relatively high level.”
I’ve contacted hard drive manufacturers themselves for comment.
Conversely, while big hard drives are still expensive we’re seeing a race to the bottom as far as solid state storage is concerned. Thanks to demand for Ultrabooks and the like, competition in the supply chain there is looking very healthy. Indeed, it’s possible to get a 256GB drive like Crucial’s excellent M4 for less than £200 now, and many of last year’s premium drives based on the SF2281 controller are even cheaper.

Carl Froch vs Lucian Bute Live

Live text commentary as Carl Froch challenges Lucian Bute in Nottingham for the Canadian's IBF super-middleweight title.


ROUND 1
Two tall and rangy fighters, the fight starts in the centre of the ring.
Two good rights from Froch and the place erupts.
Chants for Bute as the Canadian dominates the centre of the ring, but Froch rebounds with a right left flurry that forces the champion into the ropes.
Froch is then forced into the corner himself, and his prominent nose is already starting to redden.
The round ends with the pair exchanging punches, which bodes well for Froch.

ROUND 2
Froch commences the second round poking out jabs, but Bute in unruffled and starts to move forward.
He's looking to throw punches to the body, and whenever Froch is able to land Bute counters.
These left uppercuts to the chest of Froch look ominously powerful.
But Froch starts to unload, and gets a decent combination away which the home support adore. Froch has started well, and that was always the game plan.
Bute is measuring his jabs, but two excellent shots are landed by Froch, and the bell ands a great round for The Cobra.

ROUND 3
Bute lands a decent right, countering a misdirected jab from Froch.
But The Cobra is not letting the champion settle and Bute is not allowed to settle.
Froch is landing combinations and the Bute doesn't like it. A big right hand has Bute wobbling, and Froch has him just where he wants him. Bute hasn't been hit with combinations like this since October 2008.
Froch hits uppercuts and body shots and Bute is on wobbling legs. It's all Froch in this third round, and Bute is trying to hold on.
He looks out on his feet. Bute is hanging on ad the bell sounds. What a round for Froch.

ROUND 4
A minute may not have been long enough for Bute here. He's looking to stay in this fight, but he still has power and lands an effective left cut. Froch needs to me smart, keeping Bute guessing. He is doing that, as Bute lines up a big shot but misses.
However, as the seconds tick on Bute's mind is clearing.

The place exploded at the climax, and Bute is now on his stool receiving liquid. Now he's back on his feet, and is applauding all four sides of the arena. His head is clear, and that's good to see.

Analyzing screen-to-body size ratios of top Android handsets


It’s a well known fact that there’s nothing like a bit of graphing to brighten up a geek’s day. This seems to be well understood by a Reddit user that goes by the name of “Thare” who, after embarking on a search for a new Android phone that had the largest screen while maintaining the smallest possible size, decided to share the wealth of information that he had gathered.
It will come as no surprise that of the phones he compared the Samsung Galaxy Note ended up at the top of the heap having 66.9% of its body area made up of touch-screen real estate. Of course, no one can really call the Note a small device, unless they possess Shaquille O’Neal-sized hands.

While this isn’t a comprehensive study of all the available Android devices on the market, Thare did a good job including a range of the most popular devices across the four US carriers. Samsung also garnered the second spot on the list with its yet to be released Galaxy S3 (which of course is made for humans) which has 66.1% of its svelte design available for touch interactions. HTC rounds out the top three with its EVO 4G LTE phone running on Sprint. Its 4.7-inch screen gives owners 66% of real estate to play with.

iPhone owners won’t be surprised to see the 4S coming in next to last place, with the trade-off being of course those beautiful Retina displays that Apple is installing in the world’s most popular smartphone. Which leads to an interesting thing to point out. While the Galaxy Note certainly has a large screen, it also has the distinction of having one of the lowest pixel density’s in the chart. While it’s the first Android device to sport a higher resolution than the 4S, the iPhone still takes better advantage of the space it has to work with by having a pixel density of 326 ppi compared to the Note’s 285.

While the comparison of different devices is certainly interesting, probably the real gem that is visualized is the slow progression we are seeing in the mobile industry towards larger screens installed in consumer devices. With rumors abounding that Samsung has retooled many of its assembly lines to mass-produce its flexible OLED screens, it’s conceivable that we could, sometime in the near future, see bezel-less devices to hit retail stores. While market analysts say that it won’t be until 2017 before we see the market dominated by flexible display devices, it’s certainly interesting to think about the possibility because bezel-less handset will totally change this list.

General Motors Un-Friending of Facebook Ads Spells Trouble for Users

Brace yourselves Facebook fans for more paid status updates, sponsored stories, App Center, and mobile ads, as the social network tries to prove its worth after getting a black eye from General Motors, one of the largest advertisers in the U.S.

If you haven't heard the news, GM will stop advertising on Facebook after discovering that people don't shop for cars between status updates, pokes, likes, and virtual crop harvests. Given that Facebook's initial public offering is set to take place Friday, the timing for this news couldn't get much worse.
GM will still have a presence on the social network through its Facebook pages, but that activity doesn't contribute to Facebook's bottom line, according to The Wall Street Journal. “We remain committed to an aggressive Facebook content strategy through all of our products and brands moving forward,” GM said on its Facebook page.

But Facebook ads? No más. At least for now.

Facebook's direct financial hit from GM's ad break-up doesn't appear to be that big. The car company contributed about $10 million to Facebook's $3.7 billion in revenue for 2011, according to the Journal. But GM is more than just a blank check for advertising dollars; it's the company responsible for the Corvette, Camaro, Pontiac GTO, and Trans Am. It's an iconic company that makes iconic products and some critics are wondering whether GM's decision might inspire other companies to reassess their Facebook ad spending.

Facebook is closing in on one billion active users (about 14 percent of the world's population), but it seems no one's really sure if those all those eyeballs convert into value for advertisers. Common sense says they should. Budweiser tries to sell you beer during Monday Night Football, so why not try to sell you beer while you talk about Monday Night Football on Facebook?

And yet, as NPR recently reported, few studies have looked at whether Facebook ads work, so nobody knows how effective social advertising really is. That's a problem, since the majority of Facebook's revenue comes from advertising.

With so much at stake for the social network, it's a good bet the company will look to reassure investors that Facebook is the advertising giant many businesses hope it will be. For Facebook users that means we can expect more advertising experiments coming our way through the desktop and mobile versions of Facebook, and maybe even on third-party sites.

Let's just hope the advertising madness doesn't get too far out of control.

They’re Bringing The Furby Back, And It Could Be All Kinds Of High Tech

Back in 1998 the world went a little apeturd over the Furby. While Amazon was still just getting off the ground and didn’t much suffer from the craze, brick and mortar stores were crawling under the demand. The £24 ($40 USD in 1998 dollars and $56 today) could be resold for as much as three times its price. It’s now a collector’s item and the company that made it, Tiger Electronics, seems to be planning on releasing a new version for the Holidays 2012. There isn’t much information on it aside from the picture you see above.

Toy expert Peter Jenkinson of www.toyology.com said: ‘The image suggests that the moving facial parts have been entirely replaced by an LCD screen. ‘This will prompt lots of talk, not all of it intelligible, on Furby forums.’
Other “experts” are predicting Wifi connectivity and only Furby-to-Furby interaction. Truth is, no one really knows. And no one is sure if the little fur balls will be able to recapture the insanity of their first arrival.

Space freighter plunges into southern Pacific

Europe's unmanned ATV 2 space freighter Johannes Kepler burned up on reentry early this morning as planned, after undocking from the International Space Station yesterday.


Contact with the Automated Transfer Vehicle 2 was lost at 8.41pm GMT (3.41pm ET) at an altitude of 80km, just before the vehicle fell into the southern Pacific Ocean.

There was one unplanned manoeuvre, following a warning from NASA that a piece of space debris was set to approach within 50 meters of the ship about two hours after it left the ISS. Using its last tonne of fuel, the ship fired its thrusters briefly to move out of danger.

"The mission of ATV-2 has been very smooth and we have encountered during these four months only very minor issues that were quickly taken care of by our teams," says Nico Dettmann, head of ESA’s ATV programme.

"ATV has shown again its capabilities in servicing the Station, and we are looking forward to the next, Edoardo Amaldi, which will be shipped to Kourou in August for launch in early 2012."

Just before hitting the atmosphere, Johannes Kepler was commanded to begin tumbling to make sure it would disintegrate and burn up safely.

Pieces such as the heavy docking adapter and main engines – designed to withstand extreme heat – struck the ocean at around 4pm ET. There were no hazardous materials aboard.

The freighter's last moments were recorded by a prototype 'black box' provided by the US Center for Orbital and Reentry Debris Studies. It collected information on acceleration, roll, pitch and yaw rates, temperatures and GPS coordinates.

The black box was then left to decend on its own, protected by its own heatshield, and transmitting its stored data via the Iridium satphone system.

The information will help to predict what happens to space hardware as it reenters and comes apart, and should help in designing future spacecraft so that they break up into less hazardous fragments on reentry.

"We broke many records with ATV-2," says Alberto Novelli, head of ESA’s ATV Mission Operations.

"Not only was this the heaviest payload ever launched by ESA and the Ariane 5 rocket, but the ATV’s engines also achieved the biggest boost for human spaceflight since the Apollo missions to the moon: we raised the Space Station’s orbit by more than 40 kilometres."

Analyst: Swap into AMD shares and out of Intel

A prominent financial analyst is advising investors to swap into AMD shares and out of Intel.

According to Craig Berger of FBR Capital, AMD “should gain both desktop and notebook processor market share” with the help of Hewlett-Packard and Acer.

Although Berger emphasized he wasn’t "negative"” about Intel, the analyst pointed out that Fusion APU pricing is approximately 10%-15% below Intel’s competing Sandy Bridge line - which doesn’t even support DX11.

"We are not negative on Intel near $22, we just want to limit exposure to PC chip stocks, while recognizing the potential for more earnings growth with AMD in the second half of 2011.”

To be sure, Berger estimates AMD can boost its CPU market share by 3-5 percentage points, "possibly adding $900 million to $1.5 billion of annual revenues and 40-60 cents a share in profits."

However, the analyst was careful to note Intel has "major scale, manufacturing and costs advantages" over AMD, and was undoubtedly capable of "squashing" Fusion with more aggressive pricing.

Thus, the AMD call remains "largely tactical in nature and less of a long-term investment."

Nintendo admits it faked Wii U game footage

You know, I haven't been impressed with Nintendo in, well, just about ages. I much preferred playing Golden Axe on the Sega Genesis than Mario on the NES.

True, that was many, many years ago - but some things never change.

For example, I have long suspected Nintendo excels in little else but marketing, as the corporation seems to have an uncanny knack of convincing people they absolutely must buy a subpar system and play mindless games until their eyes are red from sleep deprivation.

Admittedly, I probably do sound like an aging curmudgeon, but I always believed the color Lynx was miles ahead of the monochrome Game Boy.

But what did the mindless masses end up buying? Yeah, the Game Boy. Sure, the quality was lacking, but so friggin' what? Obviously, high-end graphics have never mattered to Nintendo.

So that's why I wasn't at all shocked to learn the bloated corporation had faked video game footage ostensibly rendered by its "next-gen" (*cough*) Wii U console this week at E3 in Los Angeles.

That's right, some of the clips were actually snatched from Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 games, both of which, IMHO, probably boast superior graphics to whatever advanced "console" Nintendo is working on.

But Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime seemed rather nonplussed by the controversy, telling GameTrailers the presentation was perfectly legit, as the graphics on the Wii U would definitely be comparable to what was shown at the LA game show.

"We're talking a year away from when the system's going to launch. The system's going to be 1080p," Fils-Aime claimed.

"You're going to see games that take full advantage of a system that has the latest technology and can push out some incredible graphics."



Yeah, right. If I was an optimist, I would say Nintendo needs to internalize the following age-old slogan:

"You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time."

But they won't, because they really don't have to. Unfortunately, modern consumers tend to fall for slick marketing campaigns, and never seem to learn that spin just can't quite make up for lack of quality.
