How To Install and Configure the Xbox 360 Wired/Wireless Controller under Ubuntu 12.04/Linux Mint 13

If you find difficulties running your XBOX 360 controller, then this tutorial will help you install it on a computer running Ubuntu/Linux Mint, and also show you how to configure it. This tutorial is workable for both wired or wireless X-Box 360 controllers.

Getting Started

To be able to use your Xbox 360 wired/wireless controller under Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise Pangolin) or Linux Mint 13, you need first to install some required packages. So, open the terminal and run this command:

sudo apt-get install --install-recommends jstest* joystick xboxdrv

Connect now your game controller to your PC via USB (wired) or connect your XBOX 360 PC wireless gaming receiver for your wireless controller, then run this command to start the configuration:

jstest-gtk

In the window that shows up, select your controller (Microsoft X-Box 360 pad, Generic X-Box pad, etc.) and click Properties:

Note If your controller is not listed, try to click the "Refresh" button.

A new window will pop-up which will help you calibrate your gaming controller, remap the buttons of your game controller (changing the order of axis and buttons), etc.

After you finish your configuration, save your new settings and close the window. You will be able now to use your Xbox 360 controller to play games under Ubuntu/Linux Mint.

Backup Your Original XBOX 360 Games With XBoxBurner On Ubuntu/Linux Mint

XBoxBurner is a program with GUI that allows users to make copy of their original XBox 360 games. This excellent software will help you avoid losing your original purchased games when they get scratched as well as saving money on re-buying already purchased games.

This software is created for personal use and not for piracy purposes. Use it only to copy your original games to use for yourself not to distribute them online, which is illegal. Since there is no PPA for XBoxBurner currently, we will help you install it from our custom PPA. You can find the home page of the software here.

XBoxBurner Installation

To install XBoxBurner on Ubuntu 12.10/12.04/11.10 or Linux Mint 13 or older, open the terminal and run these commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:upubuntu-com/backup
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install xboxburner

You can start it now from the Unity Dash:

For Linux Mint, start XBoxBurner from the Start menu or run this command:

xboxburner

Enjoy!

Mandatory Xbox 360 will not work on old units

Microsoft is set to push out an Xbox 360 software update, but now all Xbox 360s will work with it.

The biggest part of the update will be the ability to run new high-capacity DVD media that was designed specifically for the console. Because it is a slightly new disc format, it won't work with just a standard DVD drive, which is what the early Xbox 360 units in 2005 and 2006 used.

"Following a recent update to our system software, we have become aware of an issue that is preventing a very small number of Xbox 360 owners from playing retail game discs," said Microsoft in an e-mail to Eurogamer.com.

"This issue manifests itself a as a unique 'disc unreadable' or 'disc unsupported' error on the screen."

However, the company is trying to make things right by shipping out a brand new Xbox 360 to those affected. "We are also able to detect this issue over Xbox Live and are proactively reaching out to customers that may be impacted to replace their console," the e-mail continued.

This isn't the first time Microsoft has pushed out mandatory updates to the system that posed undue hardship on console owners. A couple years ago the company introduced a massive software update that ate up more space than the memory that was available on low-end 360 systems. To resolve that, Microsoft sent out Memory Units to customers with an affected unit.

In addition to having a higher capacity, the new DVD medium is believed to have stronger piracy restrictions built in.
