Parsix GNU/Linux 4.0 Test 1

Alan Baghumian has announced the availability of the first test release of Parsix GNU/Linux 4.0, a desktop Linux distribution and live DVD based on Debian's testing branch: "This is the first test version of the upcoming Parsix GNU/Linux 4.0 release. This version has been synchronized with Debian's testing repositories as of July 1, 2012 and brings a lot of updated packages. Parsix 'Gloria' is the project's first release with GNOME 3 and ships with LibreOffice productivity suit. Gloria has a brand new software manager. Highlights: GNOME 3.4.2, X.Org 7.6, GRUB 2, GNU Iceweasel 13.0, GParted 0.12.1, Empathy 3.4.2.3, LibreOffice 3.5.4, VirtualBox 4.1.16 and a brand new kernel based on Linux 3.2.20 with TuxOnIce, BFS and other extra patches." Latest Games Added to Ubuntu Software Center

Ubuntu Software Center is getting bigger and a lot of new applications and games are launched on a regular basis. Here are some of the latest games that have been made available.

On the third place there is THE SCND GENESIS: LEGENDS, a hybrid of turn-based RPGs and conventional 2D Fighters, with anime effects. The games is free.

On the second place there's Implosion, a buildings demolition simulation puzzle game in which players drag and plant dynamite bundles to demolish various construction structures. The application is free.

The latest game added to Ubuntu Software Center is Elementals: The Magic Key, in which players embark on a thrilling adventure to help Albert, a young magician, restore the Key of Eiron, and save his sister kidnapped by Sibelius, a wicked sorcerer. The game costs $9.95 (€7.92).

Chakra GNU/Linux 2012.07 Has Linux Kernel 3.4.3

The Chakra Development Team, through Anke Boersma, proudly announced last evening, July 3rd, the immediate availability for download of the Chakra GNU/Linux 2012.07 operating system.

Chakra GNU/Linux 2012.07 is the last maintenance release for Archimedes series and it is powered by Linux kernel 3.4.3 and KDE Software Compilation 4.8.3. It also contains QtWebkit 2.2.1, Qt 4.8.2, and an optional Linux kernel 3.0.35.

“Though no new KDE this time for a new ISO, lots of other changes make this a very interesting new ISO in the Chakra development plan.”

“A switch to systemd is in the near future for Chakra, and to prepare for that, lots of files were moved, many, many core packages updated, a big move from /lib to /usr/lib set in motion.” - said Anke Boersma in the official announcement.

About Chakra GNU/Linux

Chakra GNU/Linux was originally based on Arch Linux but, while some of the underlying architecture and the package manager remain the same, packages from Arch are not compatible with Chakra.

Chakra uses the KDE desktop environment and a half-rolling release model, meaning that the core software is updated less often and is considered stable, while everything non-essential is updated frequently to ensure that users always run the latest applications.

Blizzard Is Not Banning Diablo III Linux Players

In spite of some rumors that Blizzard is banning people running Diablo III on Linux platform, emulated through Wine, it appears that this is not the case.

The whole shenanigan was started on Blizzard's official forums by some gamers complaining about being banned after playing Diablo III on Linux.

Blizzard has replicated the setups described by the users and tested their own system, and Linux clients were not banned. The company has said plainly that they are not banning the Linux players, only cheaters.

“We’ve extensively tested for false positive situations, including replicating system setups for those who have posted claiming they were banned unfairly.”

“We’ve not found any situations that could produce a false positive, have found that the circumstances for which they were banned were clear and accurate, and we are extremely confident in our findings.“

“Playing the game on Linux, although not officially supported, will not get you banned – cheating will,” a Blizzard statement said through their forums.

Calibre Plugin of the Week:FanFictionDownLoader

Calibre is one of the best eBook management software available right now, but its strength lies in the abundance of plugins available for it.

This week we’ll take a look at an interesting extension called „FanFictionDownLoader." According to the developer, this plugin brings the functionality of FanFiction Downloader to Calibre.

FanFictionDownLoader can download FanFiction stories and books from over 50 different sites into ebook format, has support for downloading images in the story text, and many other features.

It can be easily installed from the Preferences menu or from the official forum, and it needs version 0.8.30 or higher of Calibre. A comprehensive tutorial about its usage can also be found on the above forums.
