Arch Linux 2012.07.15

Pierre Schmitz has announced the release of Arch Linux 2012.07.15 "netinstall" CD image. Since Arch Linux is a strictly rolling-release distribution, this release merely provides an updated system installer and it does not represent a new Arch Linux "version" in the traditional sense of the word. From the announcement: "New CD images containing a current Arch Linux snapshot have been released. Most notable change is that AIF (the Arch Installation Framework) is no longer included but instead some simple install scripts are provided to aid in the installation process. This means that a menu driven installer is no longer available and we rely more on documentation to guide new users. Instead of six different images we only provide a single one which can be booted into an i686 and x86_64 live system to install Arch Linux over the network." Download the new Arch Linux "netinstall" CD image from here: archlinux-2012.07.15-netinstall-dual.iso (483MB, MD5, torrent).

Linux Mint 13 "Xfce"

Clement Lefebvre has announced the availability of the Xfce edition of Linux Mint 13, codename Maya. From the what's new page: "The highlight of this edition is the latest Xfce 4.10 desktop, which features the following improvements: online documentation; application finder; multiple rows and deskbar mode in the panel; actions plugin; MIME type editor; single-click operation, automated background image cycling and thumbnail rendering on the desktop; edge-tiling in the window manager. In the past, the xfapplet plugin made it possible for Xfce users to run GNOME applets within the Xfce panel. After talking to the MATE and Xfce developers, we updated this plugin and it now supports MATE applets. Among the many MATE applets that can now run in Xfce, mintMenu is probably the most popular. Improvements were made to mintMenu so that it could support Thunar, the Xfce Settings Manager and other aspects of the Xfce desktop...." See the release announcement including upgrade instructions, and check the release notes for known issues. Get “Google Now” feature of Jelly Bean on Rooted ICS Android Phone

Google Now is happened to be the best thing that you could get in jelly bean 4.1 phones. It’s like your own personal secretary that stays with you throughout, unlike any other feature of ICS. But not anymore because now, your ICS phone could also get Google Now without its voice search feature, provided your phone is running ASOP ICS ROM else it won’t work.

Though without the voice search feature Google Now would be half as good as the one in jelly bean but still its worth having in your ICS as it will be enriched with a lot of other good stuff that comes along Google Now. However to get it in your ICS, follow the steps;

  • Download the APK
  • Open root explorer or other root enabled file explorer and go to / system
  • Tap the “Mount R/W” button, then scroll down to build.prop and press and hold on it. Tap “Open in Text Editor”
  • Find the line that says ro.build.version.sdk=15 and change it to readro.build.version.sdk=16. Press the menu button and tap “Save and Exit”
  • Goto /system/app and hold-press GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk. Rename it toGoogleQuickSearchBox.apk1. If that file doesn’t exist just skip this step
  • Reboot your phone and install the Google Now APK
  • Go back and edit build.prop as described in step two, and change thero.build.version.sdk line back to 15
  • Reboot your phone one last time and you are done!!

Install Linux Kernel 3.4.6 On Ubuntu 12.04/Linux Mint 13

Another maintenance release for Linux 3.4 has been made available recently. We have previously seen the release of Linux 3.4.5 (three days ago), but this kernel brings minor improvements and updates drivers. You can see the release notes for Linux 3.4.6 here.

Linux Kernel 3.4.6 Installation

To install Linux Kernel 3.4.6, you can install Debian packages for your appropriate architecture from this page, or make an automatic installation via our bash script for both Ubuntu 12.04 or Linux Mint 13 as follows:

 cd /tmp && wget -O linux-kernel-3.4.6 http://dl.dropbox.com/u/47950494/upubuntu.com/linux-kernel-3.4.6

chmod +x linux-kernel-3.4.6 && sudo sh linux-kernel-3.4.6

When the installation is complete, reboot your system. Next, make sure Linux Kernel 3.4.6 is installed correctly with this command:

 uname -r

To remove this kernel and restore the previous one, run this command:

 sudo apt-get purge linux-image-3.4.6-030406-generic

Good luck!
