OpenMandriva Lx 23.01 ROME

 

OpenMandriva's grand entry to the world of "rolling-release" distributions comes to fruition today with the initial release the project's "ROME" edition. It aims to continually provide the most up-to-date software packages without compromising the system stability. "To make sure you do not fall behind, we are announcing a new way to keep you up to date - ROME, the OpenMandriva rolling edition. ROME is the rolling release, designed for individual users; it will receive the most up-to-date packages, including recent security and bug-fix updates. A lot of interesting things have happened in the rolling branch since the traditional point release. Among others, KDE Frameworks 5.101, Plasma Desktop 5.26.4, KDE Applications 22.12.0 are in, and everything has been rebuilt with the Clang 15.06 compiler. Linux kernel 6.1.1 (Clang-compiled kernel as default, with the option to install GCC-compiled kernel easily from the om-welcome module)." MX Linux 21.3

 

The MX Linux team have announced the release of an update to the project's 21.x series. The new version includes Xfce 4.18 and an optional updated kernel with new hardware support. "MX Linux 21.3 is the third refresh of our MX 21 release, consisting of bug fixes, kernels and application updates since our original release of MX Linux 21. If you are already running MX 21, there is no need to reinstall. Packages are all available thru the regular update channel. Highlights include: Debian 11.6 Bullseye base; new and updated applications; the Xfce releases now feature Xfce 4.18; Fluxbox gets a new mx-rofi-manager tool to save and manage rofi configuration; the KDE release is now a full AHS-enabled release, defaulting to the 6.0 AHS kernel; the Debian Stable kernel (5.10) is still available in mx-packageinstaller." Legacy OS 2023

 

 Legacy OS, a project originally targeting older hardware, has returned after several dormant years. The distribution was once a member of the Puppy Linux family, but has shifted its base to antiX while maintaining the same IceWM user interface. A release announcement on the project's home page reads: "After a six year hiatus Legacy OS is back, now based on antiX and Debian 'Bullseye' 64-bit. After a long development period, Legacy OS 2023 is now available for download. As with previous releases, Legacy OS uses the Ice Window Manager (IceWM) and ROX/PCmanFM file managers. All the included Ice window manager themes have been created for this release. A useful selection of applications are included by default. VLC, MPV, Strawberry, Peek, FreetuxTV, OnlyOffice, Scribus, GIMP, Inkscape, Firefox-ESR, Thunderbird and Transmission, just to name a few. Also available for download through the Synaptic package manager are the Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge web browsers. Unlike previous releases, Legacy OS 2023 will receive regular updates." NuTyX 20.12.0

 

NuTyX is a French Linux distribution (with multi-language support) built from Linux From Scratch and Beyond Linux From Scratch, with a custom package manager called "cards". The project has published a new version with multiple supported desktop editions. "21 months after the release of the first version of NuTyX 11, I am very happy to announce the new version of NuTyX 20.12.0 and cards 2.4.123. The 64-bit version is a complete new project. The compilation chain is completely rebuilt in addition to glibc 2.32, GCC 10.2.0 and binutils 2.34. The Xorg-server graphics server version 1.20.10, the Mesa 3D library in 20.3.0, GTK3 3.24.24 and Qt 5.15.2 are also in their latest versions. The Python interpreters are at 3.9.0 and 2.7.18. The Xfce desktop environment is updated to version 4.14.3. The MATE desktop environment is also updated to version 1.24, the latest version available. AV Linux 2020.11.23

 

Glen MacArthur has announced the release of AV Linux 2020.11.23, the latest version of the multimedia-oriented distribution with a collection of audio and video production software. This is the project's first build based on MX Linux and it also features separate editions for x86_64 (with Xfce) and i386 (with Openbox) platforms: "After several months of behind-the-scenes work, two ISO images of the brand new 'AV Linux MX Edition' have been released. With 32-bit Xfce/Openbox and 64-bit Xfce editions, this new project is based on MX Linux 19.3. The MX development team is aware of this project and have kindly provided assistance and a warm welcome but it is important to note that this project is an unofficial respin and at the current time not under the umbrella of the antiX/MX projects. MX is the new home base of AV Linux and I'm very excited about combining the phenomenal tools and utilities of MX with the well-known content-creation focus that has defined AV Linux since 2008. Highlights of this release: Linux kernel 5.9.1, includes the Bluetooth stack security fix; greatly expanded AVL-MXE Assistant; new custom 'Diehard' and 'Earth' themes...." EasyOS 2.5

 

 EasyOS is an experimental Linux distribution which uses many of the technologies and package formats pioneered by Puppy Linux. The distribution features custom container technology called Easy Containers which can run applications or the entire desktop environment in a container. EasyOS 2.5 introduces a number of new changes which are highlighted in the project's release announcement: "EasyOS 2.5 is the latest in the 2.x Buster-series, built with Debian 10.6 DEBs. As well as the DEBs, other packages are updated, including SeaMonkey 2.53.5, and the Linux kernel is now 5.4.78. There have been many infrastructure and utility fixes and improvements, including hardware-profiling for the CPU temperature monitor. The single most significant application change relative to the previous release is the new BluePup bluetooth manager, replacing Blueman (though Blueman is in the repository, so can be installed if needed). Pop!_OS 20.10

 

 System76, a US-based manufacturer of Linux desktops, laptops and servers, has announced the release of Pop!_OS 20.10, the latest version of the company's Ubuntu-based Linux distribution. It includes various usability improvements, such as stacking tiled windows, floating window exceptions, fractional scaling or external monitor support in hybrid graphics mode: "Pop!_OS 20.10 is the result of fine-tuning features released in version 20.04. Similar to the tabs in your web browser, stack tiled windows atop one another for easier organization. First, use Super + S to convert a window into a stack. Using Super + Enter and your arrow keys or Vim shortcuts will add a window to your stack. You can also launch an application into the stack using Super + / to add it automatically. Super + Left or Right arrows cycles between windows in the stack. Lastly, move windows out of the stack and press Super + S to convert it back to a standard window." Linux Lite 5.2

 

Jerry Bezencon has announced the release of Linux Lite 5.2. The project's latest release is based on Ubuntu 20.04.1 and introduces a number of small changes and improvements. The firewall can now be managed through a module in the settings panel, old GTK2 software and themes have been removed, Adobe Flash is no longer included in the distribution, and new packages have been added to the Lite Software package manager. The distribution also includes some package updates: "Details: kernel: 5.4.0-52 ( custom kernels also available via our Repository for versions 3.13 - 5.9); Firefox: 82.0; Thunderbird: 68.10.0; LibreOffice: 6.4.6.2; VLC: 3.0.9.2; GIMP: 2.10.18; Base: 20.04.1. Linux Mint 18.3 Beta

 The Linux Mint team has announced the availability of a new development snapshot for Linux Mint. The new testing snapshot, Linux Mint 18.3 Beta, features several overhauled applications. The software manager and backup utilities in particular have been given a new look. Linux Mint now makes it easier to install third-party software, such as Google Earth and Steam, and Flatpak packages can be installed through the software manager. The new beta also features operating system snapshots using Timeshift. "Linux Mint 18.3 features Timeshift, a tool dedicated to system snapshots. Timeshift is the perfect companion to the Linux Mint Backup Tool. It doesn't save your personal data, it saves everything else. Thanks to Timeshift you can create backups of the operating system itself. You deleted system files by mistake? You can recover them. You upgraded to a newer release and something isn't working well anymore? You can go back in time." SharkLinux 4.13.0-17

SharkLinux is an Ubuntu-based distribution featuring the MATE desktop environment. The project has released new installation media labeled SharkLinux 4.13.0-17. "This release comes with several system changes from previous builds which aim to increase system efficiency and allow greater control for user configuration. The more significant upgrades include changes to package management and the new 'pkg' command which significantly reduce install times and provide fallbacks in the event of mirror outages, configurations at startup are no longer network dependent and finish in 50% of the execution time from previous builds and tools added to allow easy toggling of both the automatic system maintenance and default sudo behaviour. As well SharkLinux has adopted the 'edge' variant of Ubuntu's HWE kernel and now features the 4.13 series kernel." VyOS 1.1.8

Daniil Baturin has announced the release of VyOS 1.1.8, an updated version of the Debian-based distribution for firewalls and routers born in 2013 from the ashes of the discontinued Vyatta project: "VyOS 1.1.8 is now available for download. It breaks the semantic versioning convention; while the version number implies a bug-fix-only release, it actually includes a number of new features. This is because 1.2.0 number is already assigned to the Jessie-based release that is still in beta, but not including those features that have been in the code base for a while and a few of them have already been in production for some users would feel quite wrong, especially considering the long delay between the releases. Overall it's pretty close in scope to the original 1.2.0 release plan before Debian Squeeze was EOLed and we had to switch the effort to getting rid of the legacy that was keeping us from moving to a newer base distribution." GhostBSD 11.1-RC1

GhostBSD is a desktop-oriented operating system based on FreeBSD. The project has published a new release candidate for the 11.1 series, GhostBSD 11.1-RC1. The new development snapshot removes GRUB from the system installer to prevent a number of bugs and ZFS volume configuration has been updated. "This last development release of GhostBSD 11.1 is ready for testing. All MATE and Xfce images are available only for 64-bit architectures. For some of you, it might be shock that we are dropping i386 it is a decision that was hard to make. We hope for those that need i386 will find refuge to another BSD project. On this RC release, we need help to find more problems. GhostBSD 11.1 is our first release featuring our own software package repository. What changed in 11.1 RC1: We removed GRUB from the installer for 11.1 as it has caused us a lot of problems, and this is why the release is late; ZFS configuration. Issues that got fixed: The partition list was not deleted when pressing back; the installer was not listing ZFS disk correctly." Pardus 17.1

Pardus, a Debian-based Turkish Linux distribution for desktops and servers, has been updated to version 17.1. The new release offers three separate ISO images with distinct names that indicate the purpose - Xfce, DDE (Deepin Desktop Environment) and Server. The release notes are available in Turkish only, but an online translation service reveals a changelog in this interim release of Pardus: The default name of the download directory has changed from 'Downloads' to 'İndirilenler'; the system settings menu has been enhanced; the default printer test page has been redesigned; the password of the pre-defined 'pardus' user is removed when the live system is turned on; the crash that occurred when the gdebi program was run with a graphical interface was fixed; the crash in certain parts of the gnome-disks program have been fixed; new desktop wallpapers added; many packages have been updated; the theme has been refreshed; Deepin Desktop Media support added; many security and system performance patches have been added."  Issue the following command to change the default runlevel to runlevel 3 (nothing but a multi-user.target).

 Confirm the default runlevel.

Reboot and check it out.

 In the previous method, we made the runlevel 3 as the default runlevel. You can also confirm that using the following command.

 For a demo, issue the following command to make runlevel 5 as the default runlevel.

# ln -sf /lib/systemd/system/graphical.target /etc/systemd/system/default.target

 Again check the current level. Now the default runlevel is graphical mode(runlevel 5).

OpenIndiana 2017.10

 

OpenIndiana is an open source operating system based on the Illumos project and a member of the Solaris family. The project has released a new version, OpenIndiana 2017.10, which features updates to the display server and the MATE desktop environment. The new version also supports binary compatibility with Solaris 10u10. The release announcement reads: "We have released a new OpenIndiana Hipster snapshot 2017.10. The noticeable changes: Xorg server was updated to 1.19.5. MATE was updated to 1.18. Text installer now can perform basic OpenIndiana installation to existing ZFS pool (for example, in parallel to another OpenIndiana installation). Cluster suite was updated. ABI compatibility for Solaris 10u10 binaries was added. We've started to remove GNOME 2 applications and libraries. Be warned if (by some strange reason) you still haven't switched to MATE." GeckoLinux 423.171028.16 Beta

GeckoLinux is an openSUSE-based distribution designed to be easy to set up and use on desktop systems. The project has released a new development snapshot, GeckoLinux 423.171028.16 Beta, which introduces several new improvements and features the Cinnamon desktop environment. "Thanks to Kiwi, GeckoLinux will now boast the following improvements: Much smoother and more reliable startup. Splash screen during live system startup.
