Nautilus 3.6 Beta Brings New Features and Improvements

The GNOME developers behind the Nautilus project (now known as Files) announced earlier today, August 21st, that the Beta release of the upcoming Nautilus 3.6 is now available for download and testing.

Nautilus 3.6 Beta is a development release, which brings many interesting and noteworthy features and improvements, such as:

· Both Gear and Application menus were reorganized;
· Added a menu to view actions;
· Added a View options selector on the toolbar;
· Added cluebars for Scripts and Templates special folders;
· Added the ability to reorder bookmarks;
· Improved strings in Autorun prompt;
· Improved the image Properties page;
· Improved the Permissions page in the Properties window;
· Improved the error message strings;
· Improved the Bookmarks dialog's layout;
· Added per-window view mode and zoom level;
· Double quotes are now used for filenames, instead of ASCII quotes.

Nautilus 3.6 Beta is part of the GNOME 3.6 upgrade, which will be available on September 18th, 2012.

Phoronix Test Suite 4.0.1 Available for Download

Phoronix Test Suite 4.0.1, codenamed Suldal, has been announced today, August 21st, by Michael Larabel.

Phoronix Test Suite 4.0.1 is a maintenance release of the Suldal release, bringing the following changes:

• Shortened test profile versions inputted by user to be expanded to matching latest version in stream is now allowed;
• list-unsupported-tests option for debugging purposes has been added;
• Subversion as a PTS External Dependency has been added;

Linux Kernel 3.5 Has Been Officially Released

After yet another seven Release Candidate versions, Linus Torvalds proudly announced yesterday, July 21st, the immediate availability for download of Linux kernel 3.5.

Linux kernel 3.5 brings various interesting features (check out the highlights below and the quote from Linus Torvalds’ announcement) among which we can mention support for metadata checksums in the EXT4 filesystem, support for restoring and checkpointing TCP connections, support for TCP Early Retransmit (RFC 5827), a new network queue management algorithm designed to fight bufferbloat, Btrfs I/O failure statistics, and much more.

“There's a number of MIPS commits (for some reason MIPS has had a horrible track record with the -rc time schedule, I suspect I should just stop pulling late in the game), but most of the rest is pretty small.”

“A couple of dm/md fixes, some gma500 work, make kgdb 'dmesg' command work again, some networking fixes, some xfs and cifs noise, yadda yadda. About 50% of the patch is actually the SPEAr clock name renaming that is just some search-and-replace.” - said Linus Torvalds in the official announcement.

LibreOffice 3.6.0 RC2 Is Available for Download

The Document Foundation has announced last evening, July 20th, that the second Release Candidate version of the upcoming LibreOffice 3.6 office suite is available for download and testing.

LibreOffice 3.6.0 RC2 is here to fix exactly 25 bugs found in the previous Release Candidate version. A detailed changelog can be found here.

The development cycle of LibreOffice 3.6.0 will continue with one more Release Candidate version, which will be available for testing by the end of this month.

The stable release of LibreOffice 3.6 will see the light of day on the first week of August 2012.

Bodhi Linux 2.0.0 Build 5 Is Avaialble for Testing

Bodhi, a minimalistic Linux operating system based on Ubuntu, that has really small requirements, has reached version 2.0.0 Build 5.

According to the developers of Bodhi, this release will not introduce new features and it is used as a transition to the next major release of the operating system. It's considered to be rather stable and it's really close to a final version.

There are still some inherent problems with the distribution. The AppCenter is in the process of being transitioned over to work fully with this new release, which means users will not find all the packages in the repositories, and none of the current .BOD files obtained via the "Download" buttons are functional with version 2.0.0.

Zentyal 3.0 Beta 2 Available for Download

Zentyal, a Linux small business server that can be configured as a Gateway, Unified Threat Manager (UTM), Infrastructure Manager, Office Server, Unified Communications Server or a combination of them, is now at version 3.0 Beta 2.

Highlights of Zentyal 3.0 Beta 2:

· A brand new HTTP proxy module, with a much simpler interface and improvements has been added;

Greg Kroah-Hartman announced a few hours ago, July 19th, the immediate availability for download of the sixth maintenance release for the stable Linux 3.4 kernel series.

Coming after only three days from the previous release, Linux kernel 3.4.6 only brings updated drivers, a handful of other small improvements.

Linus Torvalds announced on July 14th that the seventh and probably the last Release Candidate of the upcoming Linux 3.5 kernel is now available for download and testing.

Linux kernel 3.5 RC7 comes with PowerPC fixes, various SOC fixes, USB, media, sound fixes, as well as Andrew's patch-bomb.

"Yeah, we need to talk about that. Because I last week I thought that making an -rc7 was not necessarily realy required, except perhaps mainly to check the late printk changes."

"But then today and yesterday, I got a ton of small pull requests, and now I find myself releasing an -rc7 that is actually bigger than rc6 was. Not cool, guys. Not cool," Linus Torvalds said in the email announcement.

XOrg Server 1.12.3 Is Available for Download

The X.Org Foundation has announced that a new version of their XOrg Server is now available for download.

According to the developers, X.Org X server 1.12.3 is the third stable release, bringing just a few changes, fixing some memory leaks and some out-of-bounds array access bugs.

Highlights of XOrg Server 1.12.3:

· use-after-free issue in checkInput has been repaired;
· A memory leak in TouchEventHistoryReplay has been repaired;
· PropagateMask has been extented to EMASKSIZE;
· SIGIO is now always enabled on OsVendorInit;
· EDID Est III parsing can now walk off end of array;
· EDID Est III parsing now skips some modes.

Monitor Network Usage With Download Monitor

 

Download Monitor is an application developed for the Ubuntu Apps Showdown, useful for computers with a limited Internet plan.

The application displays the monthly, daily and hourly amount of data transferred over the network and it can warn you using desktop notifications when you're about to exceed the usage quota, which you can set from its preferences.

Download Monitor integrates nicely with Unity by using dynamic quicklists so you can see the network usage with a click and also, there's an Unity Launcher progress bar which displays the used / remaining usage quota:

Once the Ubuntu Apps Showdown is over, Download Monitor will be available in the Ubuntu Software Center but if you want to install it already, you can use the following commands:

Descent|OS 3 Alpha 2 Available for Download

Descent|OS, a Linux distribution currently based on Ubuntu and utilizing the GNOME 2 desktop environment for functionality, is now at version 3 Alpha 2.

According to the developers, Descent|OS 3 is aiming for August 29th as a release date. Until then, a lot of packages have been updated in the present development version, and the MATE desktop environment is working without major problems.

There are still a small number of problems with the current Alpha release, as expected. The Plymouth theme needs to be changed, and the Ubiquity installer slideshow is not working properly yet.

Patrick Verner announced yesterday, July 5th, that yet another maintenance release of his Parted Magic Linux operating system for partitioning tasks is available for download.

Powered by Linux kernel 3.4.4, Parted Magic 2012_07_05 comes with the following updated packages: Clonezilla 1.2.12-67, Partclone 0.2.49, lshw B.02.16, udevil 0.2.9, Grep 2.13, and mount-gtk 1.2.1.

Moreover, the following new programs have been added in Parted Magic 2012_07_05: nbd 3.0 (network block device) server and client, and kmod 9.

Parted Magic 2012_07_05 also fixes an issue with dfs using cifs, removes module-init-tools, and adds the "Erase MBR" option to "Erase Disk."

Last but not least ,there's now a new Fail Safe boot option named "Load NVIDIA," which blacklists the Nouveau video driver and loads the Nvidia kernel module (Nvidia package must be installed first).
