Chakra GNU/Linux 2011.04 Milestone 5

Phil Miller has announced the availability of the fifth and final milestone release of Chakra GNU/Linux 2011.04, a KDE-centric distribution based on Arch Linux: "Almost two weeks have passed since our last milestone release. We are now proud to present our fifth and last milestone before the final release of 'Aida', planed for the 22nd of April. We have fixed KDE 4.6.2 and some other packages to get it much more stable than before. The Burg installation system got improved and it now includes GPT support. Also the WLAN detection in live-mode works now, so you have instant Internet access for installing language packs using Tribe, our installer. Appset-Qt is included in version 0.4.0, fully translated and with the support of CCR, our community repository." More details in the release announcement. Oscium iMSO-104 Turns Your iDevice Into An Oscilloscope

Instead of dropping $1,000+ on a dedicated oscilloscope, a new app/hardware combo from a company called Oscium promises to provide the same functionality via your iPod Touch/iPhone/iPad for just $297.99. Not exactly dirt cheap, but the solution appears to be far more affordable and flexible than a standalone unit.

In addition to the company’s free iMSO app, which you can download and try out for free before buying, the iMSO-104 basically consists of a breakout cable that attaches to your idevice’s dock connector and allows you to attach various leads and probes for doing whatever one uses an oscilloscope for. The first batch of iMSO-104s has already sold out apparently, so if you want one you’d better order soon to get in on the second batch which will ship on May 20 now.

Patrick Verner has announced the release of Parted Magic 6.0, a specialist live CD designed for disk management and data rescue tasks: "Parted Magic 6.0. If you have experienced booting issues with Parted Magic, this is the version you have been waiting for. The way the kernel is handled has been completely redone. This is the reason for the new major version number. The kernel modules, udev, and firmware have been moved to the initramfs. The nice graphical boot menu that we have been using for years has been removed in favor of a very basic one. Many laptops and notebooks could not start the complex menu. A large number of major and minor bugs have been fixed as well.
