How To Get Encrypted Blu-Rays Working In VLC

With a small tweak, the latest VLC 2.0.x should be able to play most Blu-rays released before 2012 (it doesn't work for Blu-rays that use BD+).

So here's what you must do to get encrypted Blu-ray discs working with VLC 2.0.x in Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin.

Get encrypted Blu-ray discs to work with VLC in Ubuntu 12.04

1. Install the required packages

The N-muench VLC PPA provides some packages backported from Ubuntu 12.10 to Ubuntu 12.04, such as libbluray 0.2.2; you may get encrypted Blu-ray playback working with VLC under Ubuntu 12.04 without this PPA, but this has been tested using the N-muench VLC PPA (by Pinguy - I can't test this myself as I don't have any Blu-rays).

To add the PPA and install the required packages in Ubuntu 12.04, use the following commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:n-muench/vlc
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install vlc libaacs0 libbluray-bdj libbluray1

2. Now you must create an "aacs" folder in the hidden ".config"
folder from your home directory and download the aacs keys there. To do
this, run the following commands in a terminal:

mkdir -p ~/.config/aacs/ cd ~/.config/aacs/ && wget http://vlc-bluray.whoknowsmy.name/files/KEYDB.cfg

3. Now to play Blu-rays using VLC, open VLC, select Media > Open Disc, make sure "no disc menus" is selected (without this, VLC will crash for most Blu-ray discs) and browse for the Blu-ray disc.

The instructions above should work for other Linux distributions too, not just Ubuntu, as long as you have VLC 2.0.x installed along with libaacs0 and libbluray1.

reNIX: A Squared, Android Like GTK3 Theme Compatible With Unity And GNOME Shell

reNIX is an interesting Android like GTK theme that uses a squared Metacity theme and is compatible with both Unity and GNOME Shell.

The theme works with GTK 3.4 (used in Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin, Fedora 17, etc.), it requires the Murrine and Pixbuf GTK2 engines as well as Unico and Adwaita GTK3 engines and is based on the GTKdroid Metacity theme and NIX GTK3 theme.

reNIX comes with two Metacity themes, one for Unity (called "reNIX") and one for GNOME Shell (called "reNIX GS") which only work in Unity respectively GNOME Shell, so don't use the GNOME Shell theme in Unity or the other way around!

Here are a few more reNIX GTK theme screenshots:

Install reNIX GTK3 theme in Ubuntu 12.04

To make it easier to install and update, I've uploaded reNIX GTK3 theme to the WebUpd8 Themes PPA, so Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin users can install it using the following commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/themes
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install renix-gtk-theme

If you're using Chrome, there's also a matching Chrome/Chromium  theme available @ Gnome-Look.

In the screenshots above, you'll also notice that I'm using the Faience Azur icon theme, which I've customized to use light icons for the toolbar and panel (which are dark). The reNIX GTK theme package uses Faience Azur Dark as a recommended package, so when installing the theme from our PPA, the icon theme should be installed automatically. If you don't want to install Faience Azur Dark icon theme, use "sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends renix-gtk-theme" instead of the last command above.

To use reNIX theme, launch GNOME Tweak Tool, Unsettings, MyUnity or Ubuntu Tweak and set reNIX as the GTK and window theme and optionally, also set Faience Azur Dark as the icon theme.

For other Linux distributions, you can download reNIX from Gnome-Look and Faience Azur Dark icon theme from HERE (it requires the Faenza and Faience icon themes).

Another nice Android like GTK/GNOME Shell theme pack is Holo, but unfortunately it doesn't work properly with Unity.

Unity 2D No Longer Installed By Default, Removed From The Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal Repositories

According to the latest "ubuntu-meta" package update from the Ubuntu Quantal Quetzal repositories, Unity 2D will no longer be installed by default in Ubuntu 12.10, and Unity 2D users are being transitioned to the Unity 3D session, just like it was discussed at UDS-Q.

Further more, the latest Unity package, uploaded to the Ubuntu Quantal repositories a few hours ago, uses a "dummy" Unity-2D package, so Unity 2D is no longer available in the repositories and won't be installable at all in Quantal.

Ubuntu users without graphical acceleration will be able to use Unity 3D thanks to llvmpipe, so there will be no fallback session anymore and Unity will look the same for all users.

Slackware Linux 14.0 RC2

The second release candidate for the upcoming Slackware Linux 14.0 is ready for testing. Patrick Vokerding in today's changelog: "Getting close! Hopefully we've cleared out most of the remaining issues and are nearly ready here. We'll call this release candidate 2. Unless there's a very good rationale, versions are frozen. Any reports of remaining bugs will be gladly taken, though." The changelog entry also includes a bug-fix rebuild of GNU grep, among other updates: "Merged upstream patches to fix problems with sparse or compressed files, and with file systems that store tiny files within the metadata. This should fix issues with compiling on file systems such as Btrfs and ZFS." Recent unofficial installation DVD images can be downloaded from here: slackware-current-14_Aug_2012-DVD.iso (2,329MB, MD5), slackware64-current-14_Aug_2012-DVD.iso (2,284MB, MD5).

How to configure a Linux hosting server

This tutorial provides you with a step by step configuration for a simple Linux hosting server. Fedora core is chosen for this tutorial, however configuration for other distributions may vary. Fedora is free Linux distribution which is developed by Fedora Project and sponsored by Red Hat.

FIAIF Firewall

FIAIF is an open source firewall; Firewall let us close or open access to or from specific ports or IP addresses to make our server secure. If we leave all the ports open on the server hackers might use the open ports to attack to the server, so we only keep the ports open which we use, for example we keep port 80 open for apache web server. Details about ports we need to open are in the explanation of FIAIF in this document.

Apache 2.2 web server

Apache is open source software which accepts HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) requests from clients and response back using web pages such as HTML documents. So if we are going to run a web site, we need to install web server. Browser sends address to the web server; web server sends back the response to the browser and then browser display the content.
